CWA Local to join French protests == By Jeff Nachtigal
Silicon Valley companies went global long ago, so it’s no surprise the union is following.
At the invitation of the French trade union CFDT, CWA San Jose Local 9423 President Louie Rocha will attend a nationwide French union demonstration on Oct. 4 in Paris to protest job cuts by the Hewlett-Packard Company and the historic French department store Samritaine.
The French Democratic Confederation of Labor, or CFDT, is one of the two largest French trade union confederations, representing over 1 million members.
This trip is a signal of ramped up global union action to voice concerns about job security.
"Three years ago my Local was contacted by French unions that were visiting Silicon Valley to protest the Compaq-HP merger. We welcomed and coordinated the protest and press conferences for them." Rocha said. "That was a no-brainer for us."
The Oct. 4 demonstration, which organizers expect to draw over 1 million nationwide, is billed as a show of support for French HP workers who are facing 1,240 pink slips, after HP announced in September plans to outsource 6,000 European jobs.
