Hummer Sales
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 06:18 AM by erpowers
This Sunday in the local paper there was a story about how the love for Hummers had not declined even with the raise of high gas prices. One reason for the lack of decline in Hummer sales could be that the people who buy Hummers get hugh tax cuts for buying them. These owners get about $50,000-$100,000 With all the problems that GM had this year can you image how bad this year would have been if Hummer buyers did not get the hugh tax cuts.

I would just like to point out that even with that hugh tax cuts given to Hummer owners the Toyota Prius has outsold Hummer models for two years in a row. This year the Prius sold about 200 more cars than the Hummer models. Last year the Prius sold about close to 60,000 more cars than the Hummer brand. Serious, unless the article was wrong the Prius sold close to 60,000 more cars than the Hummer. According to the article, this year the Prius sold 31,406 vehicles while Hummer sold 31,211. Last year the Prius sold 72,849 vehicles to the Hummer's 17,736. Part of the upsurge in Hummer sales could be due to the new H3.

1. We're all paying for commuters who drive three-ton "commercial" vehicles
This is insane. Can tax breaks be reversed so that they can be recovered as surcharges? The constitution says no bills of retainer or retroactive punishments, but it doesn't say anything about recovering improper tax breaks.

2. Why do hummer buyers get tax cuts?
Do you have a link? I find it difficult to believe. Why Hummers? I thought hybrids got some tax cuts but hummers? They aren't noted for their great gas mileage.

10. Business Use
The owners of large vehicles including the Hummer and get a tax cut if they claim that they use the vehicle to run a Business. Hybrids do get tax breaks; however, I think that came about due to environmentalist complaining that the Hummer and other large vechiles get tax break and hybrids do not get tax breaks. I will try to find a link for you. I know USA Today or The New York Times did a story in which they listed the tax breaks people could get for the Hummer and other large vechiles.

13. Links
If you google tax break + Hummer you will get a number of stories about the tax break. You can also google tax break + 6,000 vehicles and get some articles about the tax break. I will list two of the stories here in this post. The first is from Taxpayers for Common Sense and this is an informative article. The second is from the Concerned Scientists.

4. A lot of people don't know about this tax deduction. If you have a truck
and SUVs are considered trucks, that are 6,000 pounds or over, and it is used for "business", you can get up to a $100,000 deduction. SO this doesn't just affect Hummers.

8. Why I Point Out Hummer
I appreciate your post. I only pointed out the Hummer in that the article was about Hummers. If the article had been about another SUV or maybe a truck I would have posted. People have been claiming that SUV and Hummer sales have not gone down without pointing that the buyers of these vehicles get large tax breaks. Also, I believe that the bigger and more expensive the SUV/truck is the more of a tax cut the person can get. I just think the SUV sales are still high due to this tax break. In addition, with the way that the Bush Administration defines business I could probably start a business called blank inc. and get the tax cut. Remember during the election Bush could have claimed he was a small business owner just because of his stake in a tree company.

11.  H2 sales are down...
...smaller H3's are making up the difference:

Slow going for mammoth SUVs

http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzgas04q4454402oct04,0,3506602.story?coll=ny-business-headlines

<snip>

"General Motors said Chevrolet Tahoe sales were off 56.2 percent and Suburban sales off by 56.6 percent. Hummer dealers delivered 31 percent fewer H2s in September - although they sold twice as many Hummers overall as the smaller H3 more than made up the shortfall."

12. Yes, top of the line SUVs sales will continue to do very well because
of this tax break. For two reasons. For the tax break and also, if you're in the income bracket to be able to purchase it in the first place, the price of gas is just a drop in the ocean in regard to its affordability. The lower priced, smaller SUVs will not fare as well.

5. You may have been reading a PR piece that Hummer put in the papers
That might not have been "real" news.

9. LandRover does it too. Saw a similar ad in the WashPost a year
ago. Went something like this: "Enjoy your tax breaks in style and comfort."

Almost threw up when I realized the implications of it: bigger deficits, more fuel wastage, and transfer of wealth upward.
