Happy Birthday, Pogo
His and Walt Kelly's daily comic strip turns 57 today.

A generation before there was Doonesbury, there was Pogo -- the possum who helped take down Joe McCarthy.

2. Greatest comic strip ever....bar none
One of my favorite panels had Howland Owl standing in for Eisenhower, remarking "You may disagree with my right to say it, but you'll defend to the death whatever it is."

8. If I could write, I'd write my congressman, if he could read....
I'd love to see some of the old McCarthy era strips again...I used to have a book of reprints, but lost it when moving...

I do remember the wildcat that used to stand in for TailGunner Joe arising from the slime to remark "It don't pay to Tinker forEver with Chance."

4. If you like Pogo, then you'll love my buddy's graphic novel "Bone"
www.boneville.com

He is always a guest of honor at "Pogofest" too. His political leanings are the same as ours, and some of his story lines are allegory for recent political events.

9. Looks interesting
I'll have to check it out.

One of the things that I loved about Pogo was the rich detail in each panel...and this guy seems to share that...

10. Yep-not a lot of good examples on the site
but his books are available at any major retailers (often in the young adult section, as scholastic just repackaged them for kids). Bone is a bit of Pogo mixed with Lord of the Rings and Looney Tunes; it's unique, and it's probably the most award winning independent comic book series out there today.

13. It's Dick Tracy's birthday, too
You could look it up, but I only say it with such certainty because it's my birthday today, too.
John
Not quite as old as Pogo or Dick Tracy, but older than Alicia Silverstone.
