Republicans' 2006 Senate prospects sour

This is not how Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) hoped things would turn out.

High-profile candidates she hoped could defeat incumbent Democrats are shying away from 2006, and some of her own Republican colleagues are looking vulnerable.

On Monday, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) bowed out of a race next year against Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.). Late last week, Gov. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said he wouldn’t challenge Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) next year.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), which Dole chairs, has failed to recruit candidates it considers top-tier in Michigan, Florida and Vermont; no one is challenging Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.); and Republicans are embroiled in primaries in Nebraska and Rhode Island.

2. They have nothing to run on
The republicans are screwing up and even they know it. Well, most of them know it. Don Stenberg, the likely GOP candidate in Nebraska, in a speech the other day announcing his run said (paraphrasing) "Democrats in the Federal government are leading this nation down the wrong path and republicans are are letting them" Does he live in bizzaro world? Democrats aren't leading anything, and people are finally beginning to think that might be the problem.

3. They see the coming wipeout.
The House will switch, and the Senate will change dramatically. They have dug themselves a pretty deep hole, and 2006 is ours to lose. Unless of course, they steal it. They must be getting nervous about stealing another one, or why would candidates be afraid to run? Perhaps they know we're watching?

We plan to depose Kay Bailey Hutchinson this time. We have a great candidate in , who poses a serious threat to the incumbent.
