Miers WILL overturn Roe vs Wade
Miers' Views, Actions Draw More Scrutiny

http://asia.news.yahoo.com/051005/ap/d8d1u2b03.html

And some of her actions clearly suggest she opposes abortion.....

On the issue that commands the most attention for court nominees, Miers pressed unsuccessfully to have the American Bar Association put its policy in favor of abortion rights to a vote of the membership, showing a sensitivity, at least, to the anti-abortion movement, if not outright support of it.

Hecht said she has attended Valley View Christian Church, an evangelical church in Dallas, for 25 years and "their position is pro-life and I'm sure her views are compatible with theirs."

In an interview with The Washington Post, Hecht recalled Miers emerging from a lecture at the church in the 1980s and saying, "I'm convinced that life begins at conception."

In 1992, Miers said presidents have no business asking court nominees to toe their line on abortion.

Miers' ties to conservative church may offer insights

http://www.timesleader.com/mld/timesleader/news/politics/12817359.htm

"Snippets from Miers' background have given only a partial and inconclusive glimpse into her possible views on priorities embraced by the Christian right. She donated $150 to the anti-abortion Texans for Life Coalition in 1989""

Harriet Miers: 'A pit bull in size 6 shoes'

http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/content/shared/news/nation/stories/10/04MIERS_PROFILE.html

"In addition to her belief in Bush, Miers is a devout believer in her Christian faith. She maintains her membership in the Valley View Christian Church in Dallas, led by a minister with a strong view of right and wrong when it comes to abortion, an issue Miers has never addressed in public.

"The right-to-life principle is the cornerstone of American law," the Rev. Barry McCarty wrote in a January article in The Lookout, a magazine that is a member of the Evangelical Press Association. "The logic of abortion is not only wrong, it has put American culture on a dangerous moral slope.""

1. She has done pro bono work for that church and if someone
with the wherewithal can dig it up, it might prove helpful.

2. We can thank stupid freepers for this. Thanks to their total lack of
appreciation for subtlety, Bush went on TV basically screaming "Shut the fuck up, she's pro-life!!!"

3. I blew off the ABA stuff at first...
but when I found out about her evangelical ways it stopped me cold. I hope she doesn't get confirmed.

4. Why are some in the Democratic leadership supporting this woman?
Has Rove pulled another fast one on us?

Here they have George Will and all these other conservatives publicly opposing her, is this all a setup?

7. in cynicality, if roe v. wade is overturned, democrats will DOMINATE
honestly, i think making abortion illegal is too high a price to pay for power. but if it does happen, that WILL be more than enough for a major sea change in public attitudes toward the parties.

republicans will be swept out of office and the next quarter century will be for the democrats what the last quarter century has been for the republicans.

14. It would only be short term that it would be a state legislative fight.
The Democrats would sweep to such huge majorities so fast your head would spin.

8. Roe v Wade will NEVER be overturned.
I don't really see Roe v Wade actually being overturned. There are fanatics on both sides of the fence. If the gun laws ever became as draconian as England or Australia here there would be a total battle and I would wager public figures would die, and if Roe v Wade were overturned one or more of the lunatic fringe would probably take lives. Productive? No, but its for that reason I don't ever see Roe v Wade being overturned.

I'm far more concerned about other issues than that, issues that if ruled in the right way would be progression yet if not things would be the same assisted Suicide, marijuana reform, overall drug law reform, Patriot Act (though I don't see most of that getting renewed).

10. Test case reaches SCOTUS
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 09:09 PM by longship
To restrict abortions, or an outright Roe v. Wade test case that outlaws abortions.

Miers -- Supports
Scalia -- Supports
Roberts -- Supports
Thomas -- Supports
Kennedy -- ????
Ginsburg -- Opposes
Breyer -- Opposes
Souter -- Opposes
Stevens -- Opposes

Kennedy is the key. What does he do?

13. Kennedy would never vote to overturn Roe entirely.
He supports limitations, but would never vote to overturn the thing as a whole.

15. Do you foresee "Draconian" gun laws here?
Are you one of those who thinks the Democrats want to come & take all your guns away?

17. Absolutely not...
I was just using it as a reference point on the right to my argument as to why I don't believe Roe v Wade would be overturned. I'm quite happy with the gun laws as they are now, they just need to be enforced.

16. right, i think the right wing knows not to ACTUALLY overturn it
they would do better to leave it nominally in place, but put such restrictions on it that it's in practice impossible to get an abortion (unless you're a rich republican, of course).

9. Yeah, but according to some here....
we have to ignore that fact because it's not all about abortion. Apparently they think there's someone they could nominate that's actually WORSE than this stealth theo-fascist. Hey, maybe I'm wrong but like I've said, she's a theo-fascist dog just like the rest of them only she doesn't come with the pedigree papers.

11. Miers's close friend Justice Hecht made a statement that

should interest you:

"You can be just as pro-life as the day is long and can decide the Constitution requires Roe" to be upheld, he said.
