In its statement on the veto threat, the White House said the measure would "restrict the president's authority to protect Americans effectively from terrorist attack and bringing terrorists to justice."

But as new allegations of abuse surface, the chorus of McCain supporters is broadening. McCain read a letter on the Senate floor from former secretary of state Colin L. Powell, who endorsed the amendment and said it would help address "the terrible public diplomacy crisis created by Abu Ghraib." Powell joins a growing group of retired generals and admirals who blame prison abuse on "ambiguous instructions," as the officers wrote in a recent letter. They urged restricting interrogation methods to those outlined in the U.S. Army Field Manual on Intelligence Interrogation, the parameters that McCain's measure would establish.

McCain cited a letter he received from Army Capt. Ian Fishback, who has fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Over 17 months he struggled to get answers from his chain of command to a basic question: What standards apply to the treatment of enemy detainees?" McCain said. "But he found no answers. . . . The Congress has a responsibility to answer this call."

Despite his victory last night, McCain has two major obstacles remaining: House GOP leaders object to attaching it to a spending bill, and Bush could veto it. However, senior GOP Senate aides said they believe the differences could be bridged, either by tweaking the measure or by changing the field manual....

. . that means $440 million for something useful. Not that we have any problems that need fixing or anything.

I admire McCain but I don't trust McCain. He's a sellout.

In this instance, I think he's doing good. But the Bush years haven't been good for his soul (if he still has one).

I USED to have a great deal respect for McCain. No more.

Though I do agree his actions here are somewhat honorable...as honorable as a man who has licked the boots of royalty (do it once, the dishonor NEVER washes off) can be, I guess.

He has some issues, he seems to sincerely care about, but like many Dems is an enabler.
Cares about global warming, ending torture/abuse, election reform?. He was smeared in the disgusting rovianesque way -even vicious LYING attacks on his child and yet he supports Bush. That is just insane!
Yet so much of what goes on in WDC seems to be, outrageously maddening.

He sure as hell is not going to veto a $440 billion spending bill. The fiscal conservatives are right that he's never met a spending bill he didn't like. Least of all when it can make him look "strong" on "defense."

These stupid fucks are so pro-military - until it comes to supporting them or not forcing them to torture people - even though McCain knows if we torture, so will our enemy...

There could be a timid itch at his back which would be the first calcium deposits he's seen back there in a long while.

However the damage is done, when I look at McCain I see the same thing when I look at Powell -- he's a bitch to the man.

I wish some Dems and McCain would pick it up. (Notice that I said "wish," not "hope." Sadly, there ain't much hope for that.)
