Randi Rhodes theory on Mier
We know that Harry Reid recommended Mier to *.

What if he, sizing up *'s insecurity and need for
yes-people to be around him, saw an opportunity
to plant a seed of discord in the GOP?

He may have known that the right wingers weren't
going to go for this nominee, with no guarantees
of down the line conservative positions...

maybe this is reading too much into this, but
it's fun to imagine that Reid might have succeeded
in placing a "poison pill" virus deep into the
GOP..

2. Reid's move was shrewd.
He planted her name, then when * nominated her Reid praised her (faintly). The inevitable storm from the Repugs was the result. People here at DU were condemning Reid for his position and were ignoring the result of his position. It was subtle and brilliant jiu-jitsu.

3. Reid is a cagey guy. He can play dirty just like the Republicans.
I would not put it past him. He seems to be an effective minority leader or at least as effective as one can be under the thumb of the * junta.

4. I thought it seemed out of place for Reid to recommend someone
like Miers--especially knowing she's a crony. I do hope this is part of a grand plan.

5. The White House expected a Dem outcry
and their talking points initially reflected this. Instead, our elected officials and issue groups are at the very least taking a "wait and see" position, and some like Reid, have expressed positive things about her.

This is definitely enough to shake the resolve of rank and file freepers. If the libs are supporting her, she must be David Souter Part 2. This is a risky ploy, but just crazy enough to work.

7. Randi's correct.
Reid knows exactly what he's doing, trust me.

8. But this speculation is based on the assumption that Bush made
his choice without input from his advisers. If Rove, Cheney, and Hughes all agreed with the nomination of Miers, you have to wonder what they were thinking. Would Reid's ploy have worked against Rove and Cheney? I have my doubts. This nomination must have been vetted by Bush's management team and approved by same. It really makes me nervous to think that we here at DU can see this so clearly, but the management team at the WH can't. But then they are the ones who thought Iraq would be a "cake walk", so....
