The Church people are at it again; Now Harry Potter is Gay.
Has the imaginary world become so real to some that it is necessary to attack the sexuality of imaginary characters in a classroom of 12 year olds? Thank God somebody had the good sense to throw him out.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/10/06/potter.gay.reut/index.html

<snip>

Reverend Graham Taylor, who penned the novel "Shadowmancer" which, like the tales of the famous boy wizard created by J.K. Rowling, centers on witchcraft and battling evil, got his marching orders after teachers accused him of homophobia.

"As for Harry Potter, well, he's not the only gay in the village," the former Anglican priest told children at Penair School in Truro, southwest England, referring to a catchphrase from the popular British comedy TV show "Little Britain."

He also described the villains in Rowling's blockbuster series as "wimps" and called TV "crap" compared to books.

Teachers brought Taylor's talk to the 12-year-olds on Tuesday to a premature end, saying the youngsters had become "excitable," and asked him to leave.

Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 11:29 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
the good Reverend hasn't read the latest HP book with Harry and (deleted because not everyone has read the book) hooking up. Wow, a tad homophobic AND stupid...not a good combo.

And if Harry was gay, who gives a fuck, right?

44. That is also what I first thought
in who he hooks up with before the climax part of the book arc.

The only Harry gay overtones are in the fundie nuts' heads, not in any o of the six printed books (and probably also in book 7).

Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 11:04 AM by Flubadubya
Poor Reverend Taylor... these poor self-loathing closet cases don't have anything better to do than to sit around and "conjure up" (pun intended) demons to attack in the name of the Lord.

What a pitiful, pathetic, sad piece of work is this one. :eyes: :puke:

On edit: Why don't we call it "Wizard Envy"?? Hah!!

They're NOT Christians. They're fundamentalist demons, if you buy into the supernatural stuff. Otherwise, they're just rotten, hateful, poorly developed proto-humans.

In the library world, we've already heard this one so it's no surprise a crackpot looney is ranting. Of course we've also dealt with folks thinking the series was satanic. All I know is that Harry Potter made reading cool for otherwise reluctant readers.

There's probably about the same percentage as in any group of humans. However, my point was that their sexuality and/or perversion is real, Harry Potter is just a written idea.

Edit: changed to and/or so as not to imply gayness is perversion

19. That's right! Here's an excerpt from book 6!
FAKE SPOILER ALERT!
---
Ch 13,598 - More Muggle Trouble
.... Ron twisted his hands as he looked nervously over his shoulder in the Common Room.
"Harry, I have something awful to tell you..."
Now Harry was really afraid. He'd seen this look on Ron's face before. It was the same look he'd seen there the night Herminone had walked in on them at the Burrow. Harry had been quick to concoct a story about a late night pillow fight that seemed to satisfy Hermione's insatiable curiosity. But Harry knew Hermione suspected they were hiding something from her.
Ron quickly checked the door a second time with his Extendable Ears, and then rushed back to Harry.
"I think Hermione has fallen in love with me, Harry! Oh God, Harry! I don't know what to do!" Ron sobbed, as he threw himself into Harry's strong, sinewy arms.
"Oh Ron, I'm so sorry," Harry whispered, as he stroked Ron's cheek.
"Kiss me, Harry. I'm scared!"
"Ron, it'll be alright. As long as we have each other, not even Voldemort can hurt us..." Harry whispered, as he kissed Ron passionately....

You know what? I wish these people would get a grip... :eyes:

He left the Anglican ministry for health reasons.

His remarks about Harry have more to do with his own books than the vocation he abandoned. He's a success, but he's no J K Rawlings.

...but nowhere do I see that the priest said that Harry Potter being gay was a bad thing. I think his premise is wrong and he was certainly inappropriate in his comments to this group, but I see nothing that justifies cries of "bigotry!" and "homophobia!"

In the accounts I've read, his statement appears to be an acknowledgment that gay people are not some mysterious "other" isolated from "normal" life, but "in the village" of unremarkable, everyday experience.

The guy sounds like something of a crank and a novelist jealous of a more successful novelist (that's probably a redundant definition!), but he doesn't appear to be anti-gay, based on the information I've read.

As far as his Christianity goes, it is worth remembering that the Church of England clergy tend, for the most part, to be rather broad minded in their social and political thinking. In fact, the root of current strife in that church has been that the clergy have been quite progressive in their words and actions, causing distress to a significant minority of the more conservative laity.

I can't tell from the article if he was serious about the statement or if he was just saying that all of Rowling's characters are wimps (not sufficiently "Conan the Barbarian" types). I can't tell if he's a right-wing zealot or if this was a joke that nobody got.

I mean, it is homophobic to associate weakness and wimpiness with being gay, but the guy wasn't really claiming Hary Potter was the British Tinky Winky.

25. Oh come on, read the damned story before you post!!
He was joking! He was thrown out because the jokes were over the top, not because he said Harry Potter was gay. He was just claiming his books were better and the Harry Potter series was wimpy. In the same vein he calls the bad guys in Harry Potter "wimps."

He sounds like Bill Nighy's character in "Love, Actually."

The jokes were inappropriate, no doubt, but he wasn't claiming Harry Potter was gay. He was calling the books wimpy. It was a joke, like when Bill Nighy's character in "Love, Actually" writes porn jokes on pictures of his competitors to promote his own album.

Another fictional character falls to the close scrutiny of the small minded!!!!

My wife is a school librarian. She keeps all the Potters on the shelves, along with other popular youth fiction. What she does not keep is the Tim Lahaye BS, though every week some whipped, downtrodden kid stumbles in and asks for one of those make believes. Her response, "I'm sorry, you'll have to get that at your church."

you would think they would have a problem talking about the sexuality of young boys, wouldn't you?

that fact of the matter is, the "don't talk about sex" crowd just loooooves to talk about sex. this is just another way of keeping sex in the public discourse.
