2 Abilene-area teachers reprimanded by board

ABILENE — Two of four Merkel teachers accused of having inappropriate relationships with students have been reprimanded by the State Board for Educator Certification.
Documents obtained this week by the Abilene Reporter-News say a complaint was filed against then-coach and teacher Dustin Lewis for having an inappropriate relationship with a student and drinking alcohol with a minor. Lewis, 28, denied the allegations, but the state board found that he did engage in inappropriate conduct, according to the documents.
The state board also found that teacher and coach Shawn Bullock talked to a student about her sex life and sent an inappropriate e-mail to a student. The documents do not say whether it was the same student at Merkel, a community of 2,600 residents about 20 miles west of Abilene.
The state board gave both men a "noninscribed reprimand," the lowest possible punishment. The reprimands handed down this summer do not appear on their "virtual" teaching certificates on the board's Web site. Both men still have valid teaching certificates.
