Katrina victim wins $1.6 million playing slots
Associated Press

OPELOUSAS, La. — After more than a month of living with dozens of displaced relatives in Opelousas, Jacquelyn Sherman, an evacuee from New Orleans, told her niece she was depressed.

That all changed when she won $1.6 million — before taxes — playing a slot machine at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino.

...

Sherman had evacuated to her sister's home in Opelousas as Hurricane Katrina threatened New Orleans. After a month with no end in sight and no prospects, she and her niece began to pray Tuesday.

"I told my aunt that God works in mysterious ways and that I had prayed that something good would happen for the whole family to be happy," Jamie Sherman said.

2. That's great. I hope she gets a good lawyer ASAP.
There are many people who could try and take advantage of her.

5. yes i wish they had not told her name & identity
this is not the public lottery, when you win a slots jackpot, you have the right to keep your name from being published

maybe they explained that to her & she chose not to exercise that right but now she is really going to need to spend some money protecting her money

she needs this for her own family -- good lord, so many evacuees in one home!

3. During the same time period . . .
. . . tens of thousands of other evacuees and victims of Katrina prayed for "God (to) work in mysterious ways and that I had prayed that something good would happen for the whole family to be happy,"

but no "miracles" happened. Odd the way God chooses to hand out miracles, no?

....he'd already won another raffle for a house down in Harvey, Louisiana back in August but hadn't claimed the home because of Katrina...he said he'd bought 20 tickets for that drawing and then bought 25 tickets up here...the tickets are $100 a piece and he won again here claiming his second $250,000 home in less than 3 months...he stated over and over how MIRACLES DO HAPPEN...I thought to m'self....yeah for people who can AFFORD TO BUY $2500 WORTH OF RAFFLE TICKETS.... :eyes:

7. wow maybe they'll ask for their $4.25 back
somehow i don't think it would be cost-effective to go after the lady for spending less than $5 to entertain herself in 6 freaking weeks since the catastrophe

Fortunately, she ignored that one.
