If your house was broken into, what would be your response?
Would you beef up the security in your home, changing locks, getting better windows, or maybe an alarm system that alerts the police?

Or would you declare war on criminals?

Meanwhile, your house is still not secure. Worse, you've left the door open.

Listening to a New Yorker on Ed Schultz today talk about all the money spent in Iraq, and how he doesn't feel any damn safer now than he did 4 plus years ago, got me to thinking about what all that money could have done here at home in the way of increased security.

Freepers would say that was playing defense instead of offense. But then, their way is like declaring war on air. Big waste of money, and by the end of it you're still just as damn vunerable as you ever were.

Yeah, I know, I'm master of the obvious. But I just thought I'd share what was rattling around in my brain today.

1. I always like to hear the obvious put forth in effective ways.
I think you're right on with this analogy. And, we've wasted tons of funds and are more vulnerable than ever.

"Declare war on criminals" that's funny.

2. Well, a substantial part of the population is UNABLE to grasp the
obvious, so it certainly doesn't hurt to keep saying it!

3. The first question is a definite yes...
Common sense says to do my best to make sure it doesn't happen a second time. I would also speak with my neighbors so they will be aware and can protect themselves, too. Plus we can help each other to hopefully prevent it from happening again and if it does, continue to help and support.

I would give the police everything they needed in hopes of catching those responsible. I don't want someone else paying for the crimes that a criminal did.

Your analogy is perfect because with the same use of common sense, those responsible would have been brought to justice. We and the world community would work together to prevent future attacks.

4. I'd see what happens when I let my
homocidal tendencies go. I spend too much of the time in rl surrounded by Bushtians with no outlet for the rage they cause me to have. After I finally let it all out and got rid of the b & e attempter, I'd bury the mf'er, give it a day or two for the scent to die down, then go to the pound. The next time I would have a trusty dog to help me fight back. Less work for me.

5. It's already happened.
Before we got our dogs. (And the dogs were not a response to the break in, they came years later and only when I'd found a breed I really love)

We didn't do anything except change the locks (swapped front and back doors) and file a police report.

Since we've had to dogs, we had someone try 3 times while my husband was working out of town.

Fangs repel. Especially when pressed against a window that tends to distort them.

(In fact, the only thing not 'fixed' in this household is my husband...and the vet says she can take care of that)

7. I would gather my forces,
invade, & conquer the weird neighbor on the corner, spreading propaganda that he was complicit in the burglary.
Uh...maybe the propaganda part should precede the invasion. Anyone foolish enough to question our motives will be labeled as 'unpatriotic' and marginalized.

9. It's happened twice to me. Once a crackhead, the other a highschool boy.
Two different residences. I did the former on your list. The first guy went to jail for seven years. It was like his fifth time to be caught burgularizing a home. The high school kid came to me, fell on his knees in front of me, and cried his eyes out and apologized. I verbally kicked his ass and told him that if I ever heard of him getting in trouble again, I would press charges.

Anyway, I did change the locks and make sure my home was secure both times. But it doesn't matter--if someone wants into your house, they can get into your house.

13. Not to worry. We will fight those insurgent criminals where they live
so that they will be too busy there to rob anyone here ever again...or something.

10. My house was broken into before, i forgot to set my alarm
so instead of making it an armed fortress with attack dogs i kicked my own ass for not setting the fucking alarm. I declared a war on myself, I'm pretty sure i'm winning but my inner insurgency could last for up tp 9 years.

12. I'd go burn down a biker bar across town
and start a bigass rumble with whoever's left, because it's better to be fighting criminals over there.

I'd also scare the pants off my wife 5 times a day when I call with rumors about bikers headed her way.

I'd make a real good President.

I wont give into fear and live into hypotheticals and carry a gun though. Simply put if someone really wants to off you nothing you can do about it. Why waste all that time worrying.

I am all for people having armed guns in thier home if they want to because its thier right. As long as thier responsible with it.. With my disability trust me its not a good idea to walk aroud armed. Ill leave too many holes in the plaster even if he's standing at a point blank range.

24. Truthfully, I declared war
When we got a crack house down the street and they started pilfering stuff out of everybody's cars and walking away with stuff left in our driveways, I declared war. I called the Police Chief and Mayor and said I wanted them out and that if one person were hurt because they failed to act, that I would personally join them in court to inform the jury that I had warned those in charge to take action. The crack house was busted within 2 weeks. But then, I live in a small town where you can get away with that kind of thing.

Everybody also made sure to lock their vehicles, take in valuables, and keep a better lookout. But we were determined to not just live with it and we didn't.

26. Perfectly sensible response, locally declaring war.
But if you were Bush Co., you'd have made a perfunctory attempt at the crack house, get them to back down for a while, then go after criminals in a different state, all the while claiming that they had some connection to your crack house, so it was okay to start shooting them. Meanwhile, the crack house is making a comeback.

27. Like making pseudophedrine prescription only
The solution is to increase vigilance and arrests, block by block. And provide treatment on demand. Not make a bunch of broad, sweeping attacks that never get to the heart of the problem.

We agree, I was just pointing out we can do both if we're smart about it.
