Local NYC newsradio: Threat "specific to place, time and method" (bomb) >

But DHS says it's not a credible threat. WTF?

CREDIBLE THREAT?
Oct 6, 2005 7:08 pm US/Eastern

<snip>

A law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the threat was ``specific to place, time and method,'' and that the method is bombing.

``We have never had before a specific threat to our subway system,'' Bloomberg said at a news conference, adding that he planned to take the subway home Thursday night. ``Its importance was enhanced above the normal level by the detail that was available to us from intelligence sources.''

In Washington, Homeland Security Department spokesman Russ Knocke said the agency received what it called a ``specific but doubtful threat'' to the subway system.

``The intelligence community has concluded this information to be of doubtful credibility,'' Knocke said. ``We shared this information early on with state and local authorities in New York.''

Knocke refused to elaborate on why the intelligence was considered doubtful, nor would he comment on whether it was linked to an arrest Wednesday by in Iraq as reported by CNN. Knocke said he assumed New York City's public warning was made ``out of an abundance of caution.''

Federal law enforcement officials ``do not believe there was any ability to carry out the plot and have not been able to corroborate any of the facts of the plot,'' a government official in Washington said. This account was confirmed by a second government official.

Both officials said the plot that has been described was unusually specific, although they declined to provide any details. They both spoke only on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing.

2. CBS Radio said they learned of it from arrests in Iraq
Timing? Aftre today's speech connecting Iraq to world terror. Supposedly Homeland Security knew nothing about it. Sounds like a political propaganda op to me. The Turdblossom stench has reached the big Apple through Bloomturd.

3. We're from Department of Homeland Security and we have you covered
Tne NYPD and the New York FBI are freaking out all over the place about this terrorist threat but Department of Homeland Security says that they don't think much of it and those overwrought New Yorkers should like basicly chill out

Bush says we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here. On the same day he's screaming terror, terror, terror! A seemingly real terrorist threat turns up in a city that's been hit twice--a city where Charles Manson probably has a higher approval rating than Bush. (Rumor had it that Bush beat Bin Laden but just barely)

Is this Chimp trying to reverse his plummeting polls and distract people from the fact that it looks like half his administration is about to be hauled off in handcuffs?

Is this Bloomberg reaching for his Rudy Guiliani moment?

Is this a real terror threat and the DHS is showing the same competence that they showed before, during and after Hurricane Katrina.

Have the "Powers That Be" decided that for the sake of the oligarchy, Bush must be sacrificed?

What the hell is going on here?

4. It's so weird
If the feds were touting this threat I wouldn't give it a second thought. If Bush announced it, or Chertoff, I'd know it was just spin. But now that I see it's NYPD and Bloomberg calling it, I'm thinking maybe I'll walk to work tomorrow.

5. You got it. My guess is that it's Bushit
But you'd have thought they'd let Homland Security in on the plot.

6. One of the little-known facts about New York City is that...
at least since the John Lindsay years, it has been quietly rumored to operate its own (very shadowy, super clandestine) intelligence service. The story I heard -- and I have to preface this by saying it was never more than a tale circulating in vino veritas at the Lion's Head (a journalists' bar) after the Kent State Massacre of 1970 -- was that Lindsay feared Nixon would indeed suspend the constitution; in defense, it was alleged, Lindsay secretly set up an off-the-books group to spy upon the spies: a handful of implicitly trusted NYPD and Wall Street types versus the FBI, the CIA and the Plumbers, with the collected information going directly to the mayor. Lindsay -- or so the story went -- believed a Nixon coup would trigger a second American Civil War and was determined avowedly Leftist New York City would play a critical role in restoring constitutional governance. Beyond that -- given the role of the City as world financial center and UN headquarters -- it is only reasonable both NYPD and the mayor's office of economic development would have strong police and intelligence ties abroad, especially (given the City's huge Jewish population) to Mossad: today the most skilled and effective intelligence agency on earth. The point being, this -- NYC running its own spooks -- would explain both the alert and the fact Bush's homeland gestapo is calling the alert invalid.

7. That makes sense, actually
I wish it didn't. But how do they hide the budget for that?

I regret to inform you, the Lion's Head is no more. There's a bar there still but it's not the Lion's Head.

8. Yeah, I knew the 'Head had closed: '94 or '95, I believe it was. I've...
been away from the City nearly 20 years but still keep in touch with a ladyfriend in Manhattan. (The 'Head became my favorite saloon in '69, about the same time I moved to Chelsea from the Lower East Side -- and you could always go next door to the 55 if you needed something a little more William Burroughs.)

As to the concealment of clandestine operations in public budgets, easy: governments do it all the time -- and not just for black-bag purposes. Moreover the City is home to some of the most cunning accountants on the planet: Meyer Lansky was not an accident; he merely applied Wall Street skills to Mulberry Street problems.

9. I wouldn't' be shocked. if NY didn't trust the Feds.
They lost alot of people on 9/11 and know damn well that Bush dropped the ball. The NYC antiterrorism unit and the NY FBI office had info that could have nailed the 9/11 conspirators before hand if anyone had taken it seriously.

10. The problem is...
That if we had $1 for every time there's intelligence with some a**hole mujahadin says, "I've got a b*mb and I'm gonna blow up (insert place here)," or "Abdul is on his way to blow up (insert place here)," we'd pay off Dubya's national debt. We only have to be wrong once. Better to over-react and act foolish than to lose lives.
