Philadelphia Mayor Finds Office Bugged
Device Linked to FBI Probe of Corruption
By Robert Strauss and Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, October 9, 2003; Page A01

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 8 -- A federal corruption investigation was inadvertently exposed here this week when a secret listening device was discovered in the City Hall office of Mayor John F. Street.

The bug was uncovered Tuesday during an electronic sweep of Street's office by the city police department, a sweep officials said was performed routinely every few months.

Its discovery set off a political firestorm when local FBI officials announced that the bug was not part of any electoral espionage -- Street (D) is locked in an acrimonious campaign with Republican Sam Katz -- but would not say how they knew that.

"The FBI doesn't confirm or deny investigations," said special agent Linda Vizi, the FBI spokeswoman in Philadelphia. "We were contacted by police that they found the device and responded. We will confirm, however, that we have ruled out the possibility of it being connected to the election campaign."

1. Wait a second
This is troubling. But the fact is that Street's tenure as mayor has been filled with scandal. Then again I wouldn't put it past Katz to do something like this.

5. With everything else going on in this country, it is very suspicious
This sounds very Rovelike to me. It appears the thugs are going to steal control state by state.

7. Street's record is hardly one of complete integrioty
If he didn't have the reputation of controversy and ethical lapses then maybe I would agree. But clearly this does look suspicious.

2. I would like to know what the motive was
If the Mayor was involved in some kind of investigation, I could somewhat understand. But I seriously wonder what the motive was?

4. The FBI has always been very busy in PA
PA has a rich history of public corruption. Since 1998 there have been at least four members of the General Assembly sent to prison.

6. There has to be a reason.....bugs are not randomly placed
in public official's offices. Is there a criminal investigation underway? Someone needs to come clean, even if it blows the clandestine operation.

I suspect that there is a lot of discussions underway in FBI HQ now....this will be most interesting to monitor.

8. I don't see alot wrong with this.
The Repugs are short a few bricks of a load and need to have some kind of edge to stay in the race. Whats' wrong with a little bugging?

If it was Rush I'd say "buggering". hee, hee.

But I mean really, how else can the Repugs compete? Give em' a break eh.

9. Perhaps we should wait and see . . .

whether Mayor Street is guilty of something before we assume that this investigation is politically motivated, that the U.S. Attorney's Office is directed by Rove, or whatever has been suggested here.

In all likelihood this investigation has been long standing and probably commenced well before the campaign started. I sincerely doubt that a bug in the mayor's office would be the first step in the investigation of a high profile Democratic politician. Furthermore, as a reasonably prudent person, I would not bet against Mayor Street's guilt. Mayor Street is a crook, and virtually any sentient being in this city knows it, whether Democrat or Republican.

edit: spelling.
