Need to lighten up a bit? Bomb the SMURFS!
Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 07:29 PM by Atman
Okay, first of all, do yourself a favor and check out the new Wallace & Grommit movie. Funniest damned thing I've seen in a long time, and stunning to look at.

If all the mirth and merriment makes you feel guilty while Bush is out destroying the world, and you feel you need something heavy to balance it out, check this out...

Unicef bombs the Smurfs in fund-raising campaign for ex-child soldiers
By David Rennie in Brussels
(Filed: 08/10/2005)

The people of Belgium have been left reeling by the first adult-only episode of the Smurfs, in which the blue-skinned cartoon characters' village is annihilated by warplanes.

The short but chilling film is the work of Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund, and is to be broadcast on national television next week as a campaign advertisement.

<snip>

The short film pulls no punches. It opens with the Smurfs dancing, hand-in-hand, around a campfire and singing the Smurf song. Bluebirds flutter past and rabbits gambol around their familiar village of mushroom- shaped houses until, without warning, bombs begin to rain from the sky.

Tiny Smurfs scatter and run in vain from the whistling bombs, before being felled by blast waves and fiery explosions. The final scene shows a scorched and tattered Baby Smurf sobbing inconsolably, surrounded by prone Smurfs.

The final frame bears the message: "Don't let war affect the lives of children."

sad, genius, genius!

I am emailing the creator to ask him to post it online ASAP.

2. Kick!
...and I'll try to remember to kick tomorrow morning if it hasn't gotten more attention.

This might just break through the hypnosis of a few 'muricans.

4. We live in a very apathetic world, anesthetized really by all the fake
movie violence we see on teevee. It's going to take a lot to wake people up... I'm not sure this is even strong enough.

But I completely support it... it's shocking and sad that our world is reduced to this.

8. I'm amazed
I'm shocked that the creator agreed to it. He must feel very strongly about it. Smurfs are from my generation, younger kids have no idea who they are. I bet if UNICEF showed it here in the US people my age would be raising holy hell about it.

5. Kick for the morning crowd!
As promised. Atman - I think the thread must just be sinking too fast. Also I think there will be more power to this when UNICEF posts the ad online so people can see the whole thing.

6. Hmm....They should've used Peanuts or Disney characters, though...
Everybody I know hates Smurfs.

9. Does anybody here have a link to the actual movie?
I can't seem to locate it, perhaps all that's out is the still frame?

10. I have little SMURF characters on my desk. I loved them as a kid.
To think of SMURFS being blown to smithereens is really powerful. Gargamel was never so frightening. And from UNICEF no less. :wow:
