How the Zarqawi myth was made in America
The first time I heard the name of Musab al-Zarqawi was on 5 February 2003 when the then US secretary of state Colin Powell singled him out as the link between Al Qaida and Saddam Hussein.

At the time I knew that this connection was fictitious. I had proof that such a link not only did not exist, but that Al Qaida had tried to approach Saddam in 2000 and he had refused to talk to them.

With Osama bin Laden and al-Zawahiri trapped in Pakistan’s tribal belt, al-Zarqawi became the new icon of anti-Western struggle. His myth helped the transition of Al Qaida from a small, highly integrated armed organisation to a global anti-imperialist creed.

But al-Zarqawi has not reached the top through natural selection inside the jihadist movement — he has been pushed there by those who have created his myth — the Kurds, the Jordanians and the US.

a group that was in KURDISTAN. Under AMERICAN control. NOT under Hussein's control.

And WHY did BUSH REFUSE 3 times to the US military's taking Zarqawi out when they had the chance???

With Tuesday’s attacks, Abu Musab Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant with ties to al-Qaida, is now blamed for more than 700 terrorist killings in Iraq.

But NBC News has learned that long before the war the Bush administration had several chances to wipe out his terrorist operation (in KURDISTAN) and perhaps kill Zarqawi himself — but never pulled the trigger.

Military officials insist their case for attacking Zarqawi’s operation was airtight, but the administration feared destroying the terrorist camp in Iraq could undercut its case for war against Saddam.

4. I'm glad you posted this. Here we are, and we all detest Bush,
(or, at least, everyone I've seen on here does), and so we reiterate that Bush cannot be trusted, nor can the people in his administration be trusted...

and yet, as a group, we still listen when the Bushies come out with their hype--"Zarqawi! Dangerous terrorist villain!" or "Avian flu! You're all gonna die and the only one who can save you is Bush!"

I read an article in Asia Times called "The Myth of Zarqawi". I also read AP articles that said Zarqawi lost his leg, and that he later died in 2002 or 2003 because a bomb hit him because he couldn't get out of the way fast enough due to having only one leg.

I am no expert, but I believe Zarqawi to be dead. Therefore, in my opinion, every subsequent story about him as a "threat" has to be a lie.

It seems to me that people here on DU don't like to talk about the terrorism SCAM as much as they like to talk about election strategies and candidates. I think this is because they prefer to concentrate not on "what's wrong with the republicans", but on "what's right about the democrats".

But there comes a time when we HAVE to pay attention to the falsehoods and evil schemes generated by Cheney/Bush. Because, for one thing, this false terror hype is the means by which Cheney/Bush CONTROL us. And we have to break that control.

5. al-Zarqawi's a vicious nutbag ideologue
He's a lot like Kurtz in Apocalypse Now...went off the deep end. He's clueless that killing civilians by the dozens or hundreds is not likely to advance his agenda in the long run. Al-Qaeda can see that, but can't reign him in.

Peace.
