New York's Dilettante Mayor
Billionaire Michael Bloomberg doesn't have any more money to make, and isn't interested in owning a sports team or entering the World Cup regatta. Bored with his life, he spends $100 million or so to buy political office. And he gets elected.

So many people salaam him as Mayor of New York that he forgets that he's really only a rich guy looking for amusement. He does politically boneheaded things like declaring a terror alert when there isn't one. "Oops!" he says. "I screwed up, but my heart is in the right place."

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Information that led to heightened security for the New York City transit system was a hoax, government sources said Tuesday.

The sources said an informant in Iraq who provided the tip had told investigators about a terrorist plot involving New York's subway system. That informant admitted he gave false information, the sources said.

1. How is it his fault that someone lied about a terror threat?
And is your quote a direct quote or are you misrepresenting what he said?

4. We all know how closely the GOP is to each other.
They always are on target and communicate. Bloomberg knew what he was doing. This "terror" alert was very helpful to his campaign too.

I hope that no NYC DUers were thinking of voting for him.

NYC is a blue city and we should have a blue mayor, period. We must rebuild the party from the bottom first.

2. I am a fan of his...maybe because I am a New Yorker...
Hi,

Yeah, he is a Billionaire, so what. The guy still takes the train to work everyday, and he has done a lot of good for this city. Has he made mistakes? Sure.

Sorry, but I do not blame him for the fake terror alert. He recieved information, and did the right thing. The information was wrong, but he had no idea of that.

3. But he was told by DHS that the information was probably wrong
At least, he hasn't denied that. So WHY didn't he believe it? I don't mind him erring on the side of caution, but he could have beefed up the police prescence without sounding a general alarm. If he did it as a campaign stunt, he made a mistake indeed.

5. Not that big a mistake.
We WANT the error on the side of caution. We really do. I doubt anyone believed it was a true threat. Too much coincidence in timing. But we really liked seeing the mobilization. If there IS a genuine threat, our people will have had plenty of practice.

I would have been much more uneasy if he'd pooh-poohed it. When he said he would be riding the subway to work himself, he made it clear there was nothing to really worry about.

We get in those trains every day and we KNOW what happened in London.
