ACLU Pressuring Councils To Abide Court Ruling

POSTED: 7:49 am EDT October 11, 2005

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson City Council adopted a policy Monday night that allows members to mention Jesus Christ's name during opening prayers.

A federal court ruling on the issue does not allow the mention of a specific deity.

That ruling came after a Wiccan priestess won a court battle with the town of Great Falls after she sued because she said prayer that mentions Jesus favors one religious faith.

City Attorney Frankie McClain told the council the policy they adopted complied with existing law.

2. "I've learned to say one nation under Canada..." LOL!
<snip>

Most residents attending the meeting stood in support of the decision, including local pastor, Rev. Elva Martin.

"We need the wisdom of God in directing the business of a city," said Martin. "If I went to an Arab country, I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer. If I went to Israel, I'd expect to hear a Jewish prayer. In America, I expect to hear a Christian prayer."

Thelma Spencer, a Unitarian Universalist and an ACLU board member, said she would prefer a moment of silence.

"When I pledge allegiance to the flag, I've learned to say one nation under Canada, with liberty and justice for all," said Spencer. "I really feel like a moment of silence would be the solution for all. Everybody can agree on that."

In the end, council members adopted a written policy that rotates the responsibility for offering the invocation and allows a council member to choose not to pray.

3. Folks, this is South Carolina! They all pretend to be very Christian!
NOtice I said pretend! I lived there for 6 years. In the public, drinking, gambling, cursing, swearing, and the whole list of immoral things are TABOO!

However, they have more Bingo's than any place I've ever lived.
Almost all the small stores, like quick stop, and small independant grocers, etc, have slots machines that are supposed to just pay tokens...but DON'T, the trash man told me never to check the neighbor's trash, or I'd find out it was full of beer cans, and the "holiest of the group had 3 daughters who got pregnant in their senior year!

So much for moral values!

4. Am I missing something here?
Is Jesus not a specific deity?

Huh?
