With all the talk of Fascism, repealing Posse Comitatus and Marshal Law...
I thought it might be time for a reminder about who exactly your government thinks the enemy is...

The Universal Adversary

Brought to you by our very own DHS

A recent Report of the Homeland Security Council entitled Planning Scenarios describes in minute detail, the Bush administration's preparations in the case of a terrorist attack by an outside enemy called the Universal Adversary (UA).

The Universal Adversary, is identified in the scenarios as an abstract entity used for the purposes of simulation. Yet upon more careful examination, this Universal Adversary is by no means illusory. It includes the following categories of potential "conspirators":

  • "foreign terrorists" ,

  • "domestic radical groups", (antiwar and civil rights groups)

  • "state sponsored adversaries" ("rogue states", "unstable nations")

  • "disgruntled employees" (labor and union activists).

According to the Planning Scenarios Report :

"Because the attacks could be caused by foreign terrorists; domestic radical groups; state sponsored adversaries; or in some cases, disgruntled employees, the perpetrator has been named, the Universal Adversary (UA). The focus of the scenarios is on response capabilities and needs, not threat-based prevention activities." (See Planning Scenarios)

3. Holy CRAP...
those are some pretty damn loose definitions...

antiwar groups...disgruntled employees...

Looks like fascism has finally come to America. Only thing we can do to stop it is to get on the phone and tell Congress we don't want * to repeal Posse Comitatus. If he has his way, it will be TOO LATE.

4. "state sponsored adversaries" and that will be LA?
State sponsored. They were really thinking ahead that time, weren't they? "state sponsored adversaries" ("rogue states", "unstable nations") Does that possibly include any of our states, or only foreign nation-states?

But this one is my favorite
"domestic radical groups", (antiwar and civil rights groups)
antiwar? civil rights? Yeah, that's WAY anti-American, have to stomp that stuff out...cause war is good...cause it brings peace...and democracy...now shut the hell up all you protesters

And we paid for this stuff, big bucks, all these plans made against us.

Great reminder, btw.

11. Well to be fair the left did go for this crap.
We went stupidly violent in the late 60's early 70's. You might squeak by with that '30 years' qualification, but I think that the tail end of the Weather Underground/BLA nonsense spun out in the late 70's early 80's.

Hopefully we learned something.

13. How much of that was instigated by gov. paid agit-prop??
Perception being a large chunk of reality though, I see how you feel that way.

The facts lay way more in between. While the left had its share of militants it was drop in the ocean compared to RW activities. How many of those RW groups needed agitation from official gov sources? Not much would be my guess.

Logically looked upon peace activists are included in the UA, you find me any true and devoutly dedicated peace activist that would propagate violence to effect change. You wont, unless they have D.I.D (dissociative identity disorder)...

Again though I understand how you come to your conclusion.

25. We will probably never know what really happened.
Certainly some of the violence was instigated by government agents, in fact this has been proven in court in several of the big trials of the era. However trying to pass it all off as government instigated is to deny any responsibility for our own excesses. I'm not condemning what happened, but frequently we went too far. At the time lots of us felt that under the circumstances - hundreds of our own and thousands of theirs were dying every week - extreme measures were justified. Our youthful naivety and the cynical manipulation of that naivety by forces from both the right and the left pushed the movement of the 60's and 70's in directions it should not have gone.

I think we are entering another, although darker, era of extreme political instability. It is my hope that we can learn from the mistakes of the recent past, avoid the wrong turns, and perhaps get it right this time. I don't think we have much room for mistakes here - this regime is clearly far less constrained by the norms of a constitutional republic than the post war regime that collapsed with Nixon in the early 70's.

There are two ways I think this plays out. One scenario, the one The Cabal is preparing for, has its dramatic conclusion with most of us dead or in jail and the charade of our republic dismissed by an overtly fascist/theocratic regime. The other scenario ends with a Ukrainian triumph: a peaceful showdown with an isolated and ultimately impotent regime by a determined, fearless, and disciplined non violent movement of the people. It is blood or roses, and it is up to us to make sure that it is not blood.

30. "responsibility for our own excesses" Guilt by association much?
If some peoples concience drove them to violence that is certainly unfortunate, but no, nobody who wasnt actually involved in violence needs to take responsibility for it.

33. Give me a break.
Were you even around? Things got a bit on the looney side for a while. Riots, bombs, pseudo-guerilla groups, lots of marxist nonsense and romantic revolutionary idiocy. The poster I responded to basically claimed that there was no violence on the left, a claim that is unsupportable. He later backed off to a more reasonable position. Some of the crap was government inspired, some of it was home grown. I'm just hoping we don't get fooled again either way.

26. I'm not arguing that it was.
However when you make blanket statements like 'all the violence is on the right' your position is easily falsified and you end up defending your intentions rather than engaging in meaningful dialog.

Also the OK City bombing was an anomaly.

28. I never said it was ALL on the right. And there have been many organized
hits by RWers. The DJ in Denver. Eric Rudolph.

Oklahoma was just the biggest act but definitely part of a trend that had been nurtured for decades by acceptance for many smaller acts of violence. (If one call the murder of a few a smaller act of violence.)

There is nothing like that on the left. NOTHING.

They were more into gratuitous violence than a political agenda (although ostensibly they were against the "power structure"). And very few on the left really supported them.

14. The Tipping Point: Avian Flu - Tularemia - Bioterrorism
The * are eagerly anticipating the avian flu pandemic -- but won't wait. Someone will release diseases into the population (such as tularemia at the anti-war march) so that they can claim 'avian flu,' blame terrorists/domestic radical groups/unions and set in motion a militarized police state. (Additional possibility: Someone commits bioterrorism and the *'s blame it on Iran so they can invade Iran and impose militarized police state in the states).

Republican Congressman Slams Bush On Militarized Police State Preparation

Congressman Ron Paul has accused the Bush administration of attempting to set in motion a militarized police state in America by enacting gun confiscation martial law provisions in the event of an avian flu pandemic.

<snip>

"To me it's so strange that the President can make these proposals and it's even plausible. When he talks about martial law dealing with some epidemic that might come later on and having forced quarantines, doing away with Posse Comitatus in order to deal with natural disasters, and hardly anybody says anything. People must be scared to death."

Paul, himself a medical doctor, agreed that the bird flu threat was empty fearmongering.

========================================

Recently, biological hazard sensors in Washington, DC detected traces of the highly-infectious tularemia (rabbit fever) bacteria on the Washington Mall during the anti-war demonstrations held in the nation's capital, a gathering that brought together over 300,000 people from all parts of the country. An anthrax attack on Congress during Patriot Act passage, tularemia found during anti-war demonstrations, bird flu being used as an excuse to scrap Posse Comitatus and impose martial law?

27. Sing along! :)
UNIVERSAL ADVERSARY ;)
Buffy Sainte-Marie
© Caleb Music-ASCAP

He's five feet two and he's six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He's all of 31 and he's only 17
He's been a soldier for a thousand years

He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an athiest, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn't kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for you

And he's fighting for Canada,
he's fighting for France,
he's fighting for the USA,
and he's fighting for the Russians
and he's fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we'll put an end to war this way

And he's fighting for Democracy
and fighting for the Reds
He says it's for the peace of all
He's the one who must decide
who's to live and who's to die
and he never sees the writing on the walls

But without him how would Hitler have
condemned him at Dachau
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He's the one who gives his body
as a weapon to a war
and without him all this killing can't go on

He's the universal soldier and he
really is to blame
His orders come from far away no more
They come from him, and you, and me
and brothers can't you see
this is not the way we put an end to war.

I wrote "Universal Soldier" in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all. Donovan had a hit with it in 1965.-Buffy Sainte-Marie
