I think the time is right in the United States for People of Reason to stand up and fight back. We have been marginalized, made to feel ashamed of our unbelief, discriminated against. The Scientists within our community have had their findings discounted, distorted, and ignored. In the United States, the first country to be founded entirely on Secular principles, directed by the Rule of Reason, we are being led down the road to theocracy.
The Schiavo scuffle was the first call - the first time Americans noticed and became uncomfortable with the pushy religious zealots trying to force their agenda on everyone else. The Hurricanes woke Americans up to the reality of Global Warming and the consequences of discounting the findings of Science. Now the Miers nomination has made it clear that Bush is not just about incompetence and cronyism - he is trying to shape the Supreme Court by appointing someone who shares his particular brand of religious belief.
There is a feeling in the air - maybe not a full-blown Revival of Rationalism - but at least a backlash against the militant agenda of the Religious Right.
