Your opinion of Al Franken's pal, the ditto head, please
I've only heard him 2 or 3 times and I can't figure him out. He seems to be a very bright guy but totally stuck in his rw rut. I understand he is a music teacher, which makes me wonder even more. Hasn't he asked himself the obvious question: If I'm a Repubican and Al's a Democrat, how come I'm poor and he's rich?

3. He's like Alan Colmes if Alan Colmes were a ditto head...
I'd rather see Franken go nose-to-nose with a Hannity or Coulter. Franken's friend seems like a decent guy after a few sips of GOP Kool Aid.

Could have fooled me.

7. In practice, maybe, but not in theory...
...just like Colmes is a "token Democrat," I see Franken's pal as a "token Republican."

I think Franken would lose patience with a truly delusional Freep-hole. I've heard Franken issue the "sit, roll over, fetch, GOOD boy" commands to his right-wing friend, and I have heard the friend obey.

It's theater, surface-level theater, and NOT reality.

11. I disagree. Mark Luther and Franken have been friends since they were
kids.

I have republican friends that I have known forever that I both enjoy being with and also enjoy arguing with :-)

13. I say that as a casual, not regular Franken listener...
...and I've heard the guy back down. Maybe there have been times where they've actually gone down a few layers. Those were the shows I missed, I guess.

I don't doubt the fact that they're friends, I just look for a little more depth than I get from one of Franken's "ditto head" pieces.

Just a matter of taste and preference.

8. He's useful...
..Al uses him to poke holes in Pigboy's comments.

I have a good friend who is a Rush listener. We usually avoid talking politics.

9. Al has gotten him to say things you don't often hear a repub say,
I've heard him say things like "you're right Al, Rush was stretching the truth", Not often.... but I have heard him admit his mistakes. That's something you don't hear a republican say much. Al has been pretty hard to listen to without Kathrine, AAR needs to get him a sidekick with some zip real quick. I don't really miss Kathrine, but Al is painful to listen to alone.

10. I Turn The Show Off When He Comes On
Not that I listen very much to tell the truth. However when he has that idiot on I flip stations immediately.

12. Actually, I find it interesting because Mark represents...
the very freepers that we have so much trouble understanding...interesting case study so to speak.

On the other hand, maybe a lobotomy would be helpful.

15. It has introduced a new concept to them "critical thinking"
and little things like "evidence", "truth" and "resources".

14. Overall I think I like it
Sometimes I like, sometimes I don't.

What I don't like about it is that I think Al could be a lot tougher on Mark. He lets stuff slide or doesn't always address the accompanying sub-lies.

What I like about it is it gives me insight into what propaganda they believe and how they will defend it. I know, I can get that off of Media Matters but I what I find most fascinating is how Mark tries to defend it. He's fallback answer is "it's entertainment, not news." Sometimes I like Al's rebuttal because it helps give me ammo for the freepers I encounter. Sometimes the calls remind me of things I've seen on DU posts and I know a better way to shut down my local freepers.

But the best reason I like it is because I turned my brother onto AAR. He listens almost all the time. My dad has gotten hooked too. Anyway, my brother was telling his freeper friend about the segment and the guy went ballistic. He wanted to know when Al was doing the segment so he could listen and set my brother straight. They listened together and, guess what, my brother's friend admitted that Rush was intellectually dishonest. Then he made some excuses. But as time has gone one, the friend continued to listen, and he's coming around. It's been a little hard for him to take but it is working. I think the word my brother used to describe it is "discombobulated". His friend is starting (yes, still starting) to question a lot of what he thought was going on. Since Katrina, the Frist stock deals, DeLay and his fundraising, Rove, etc. he's been struggling to make sense of his world.
