Richard Pombo (R-CA), chairman of the key natural resources committee in the U.S. House of Representative, has drafted dangerous legislation that outlines a plan to close 15 national parks, sell them off to the highest bidder, and turn remaining national parks into commercial billboards. This proposal would sell for profit to oil and gas industries and private developers national park sites that represent American Indian culture, magnificent Alaska wilderness, priceless archaeological sites, and even a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt, our greatest conservation president. The rightwing cabal remind me of the villains in the movie "Die Hard." Just like the movie bad guys they took power under the pretense of representing some kind of ideological struggle. But it was all just window dressing for their actual motive, which was robbing a safe. While loudly proclaiming to be about "values" they are nothing more than common crooks. To them the parks are just stacks of money in the vault they've broken into.

FYI, the BLM auctions off oil and gas leasing rights to federal land all the time. Also FYI, it sucks, and people have been fighting it.
