Black people and Whites that are willing to put their thinking "History supplied by those that want us to believe that Black Muslims are evil" aside will learn today.

I think it is possible to listen and learn from the Nation of Islam. I don't have to agree with every thing Farrakan says but I certainly don't hate him or his movement.

How I wish though, that it was Malcom X giving us this message today.

77. Brother Malcolm was a hero

and sadly, he was misunderstood, by those that listened to the MSM, during his life time.

Many allowed others to do their thinking for them.

That is why this is such an important and historic day for African Americans and the World.

We should be able to listen to the message of Rev. Farrakan and make our own decisions.

I would be surprised if he says anything that should frighten anyone here that is truly a liberal.

I saw a thread about it here.

Now Dorothy Height is speaking!
She is a TRUE AMERICAN HERO!

To see her speak at this gathering sends an amazing signal to those Blacks over 60 that it is just fine to support EVERY SPEAKER.

She is our matriarch!
The National Council of Negro Woman is powerful.
Her words just blessed this gathering and that is taking it to a new level.

20. No Million More March thread? Shame.
There is a huge march going on in Washington now and it is being broadcast on CSPAN. These folks that have shown up are speaking truth to power. They are addressing the lie that took us to war. We should have joined forces with this march. Lent support to our fellow citizens of color and given wings to the concepts of freedom and justice. Tune in and watch.

of fallen heroes early this morning with Bob Marley's Redemption Song. Was great to see Maurice Bishop from Grenada and Che among the fallen heroes.

Very effective with some great speeches. Appealing to the youngsters with 'their music' is also great. Loved Wyclef's New Orlean's Carnival - very Caribbean.
Clearly they got the cameras right for this march since we are seeing the people. Do not miss Farrakhan today.

30. I've posted several time since Tavis Smiley's forum in which
this march/movement was conceived and have received little response as well. Change is only going to come when we all join forces as brothers and sisters. These causes are not just black, white, red, or yellow (pardon the colors) causes, but are human causes. We need to make common cause. Farrakhan invited all. I'm ashamed that the white community did not show up. Early this morning there were Native American participants.

34. I think what really says a lot is this ...
Black gay activist Keith Boykin was stopped from addressing the Millions More Movement rally in Washington, D.C., Saturday morning.

Boykin, board president of National Black Justice Coalition, said that Rev. Barbara Skinner, the event's program manager, refused to admit him to the stage area and said he was not listed on the program.

Boykin claimed that Skinner walked over to Rev. Willie Wilson, the executive director of the event, to ask about Boykin. Wilson smirked as he told Skinner that Boykin would not be speaking at the rally, according to Boykin and Donna Payne, NBJC vice president and a Human Rights Campaign organizer, who was also present.

Boykin, was invited to speak at the rally during a telephone conference on Wednesday by Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan, the founder of the Million More event.

http://www.washblade.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=2973

Sorry, but Farrakhan, Wilson, and the other leaders of the march lost any credibility with me when they revealed themselves to be just as bigoted as the Repugnantcans.

Cleo Manago does not consider himself to be gay...
http://washingtonblade.com/2005/10-14/news/national/millions-more.cfm
<snip>Cleo Manago, founder of the Black Men’s Xchange, who identifies as ‘same gender loving’ and not gay, said he would likely speak at the Millions More Movement march this weekend. <snip>

71. I truly hope you are correct.
But having watched local black churches line up to oppose gay marriage and even equal opportunity for LGBTs, I don't see a lot of compassion coming out of the churches.

Perhaps it's a regional thing and the black community where you are at is more accepting than it is here in the Midwest.

Regardless, I think the Repugnantcans had a tremendous influence in stirring up hatred and fear with the marriage issue in 2004. I hope that there will be some attempts at dialogue aimed at healing the rift between portions of the black and LGBT communities.

Granted, the majority of black voted Democratic, but enough were siphoned off by Republicans who used the gay marriage issue as a wedge in black churches.

Given your screen name, I'm assuming you are on the East Coast. No doubt the situation is different there as opposed to here in the Midwest where Republicans waved their "faith-based initiative" money at black clergy to get them on board and then stir up congregations with the marriage issue.

111. 89% of Blacks voted for Kerry-Edwards
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 03:48 PM by ultraist
Blacks are not responsible for Kerry's loss. They have always voted in large majority for Dems. Maybe Kerry's loss is really "Clinton's fault." :eyes:

I live in the Southeast, the regional home to the Nat'l Baptist convention: "Founded in 1886, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. (Convention) is the nation’s oldest and largest African American religious convention with an estimated membership of 7.5 million. Current President Shaw." President Shaw has publicly DENOUNCED BUSH and his handling of Katrina.

President Shaw blasts the Bush Administration for its handling of Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts, stating:

"We hold national leaders accountable for the preventable consequences of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. September 11, 2001 attacks, the war in Iraq, and Hurricane Katrina happened on this Administration’s watch. Accountability for them all must be required."

Read the full story: Hurricane Katrina Press Release 9/7/2005

I'm in NC and I know NOT ONE Black that voted for Bush. In fact, every Black I spoke to before the election expressed their disgust with Bush. He is a freakin' joke in the Black community here. Mind you, I live in an area with a 24% Black population, not somewhere in a white midwestern state where the Black pop is at 2%, way below the nat'l average (12%).

You are right that the Repubs have wisely make Ministers, especially Black ones, a tool for their political purpose.

Black Churches have been given a lot of money by Bush to spread fear into their congregations.

"I think the Repugnantcans had a tremendous influence in stirring up hatred and fear with the marriage issue in 2004. I hope that there will be some attempts at dialogue aimed at healing the rift between portions of the black and LGBT communities."

I recall reading that 10% of the population is Gay. That means that at least 10 % of the ministers are Gay.

That means that at least 10% of the WH staff is Gay! So, that means that a lot of people are living with a lot of lies.

Last I checked, we weren't beating gay people to death and leaving them to freeze in the cold or going to the funerals of gay people with signs proclaiming 'GOD HATES FAGS"

45. So...
The reason DU'ers are silent about this march is because a single gay activist was turned away? I find that hard to believe. Say what you want about Farrakhan, but the fact that ANSWER sponsors all the anti-war rallies doesn't do anything to dampen our interest in them. And as I recall, 2 out of every 3 goddamn threads in GD was devoted to those marches.

Its not just here, I went over to Kos and Atrios koping to find some discussion of this event and found nothing. Zip. Nada.

The silence is curious indeed.

A post about Farrakahan being a crazy SOB attracts folks like flies.

BUt a significant political event for Black folks garners scant interest...

Makes you wonder

How anyone can't see this is bigger than Farrakhan is beyond me. Why can't we stay focused? He is not the enemy.

I don't know about anyone else but I can't ignore the fact that prominent black leaders (Jesse Jackson, Sheila Jackson, Al Sharpton etc), tens of thousands of black people are gathered today to address the same issues we speak about here on DU!!

How can this be seen as something bad? This is NOT a republican type event or message. I agree not allowing gays to speak is wrong. However, to use one or two issues to dismiss the entire cause/rally is so much worse.

Throwing the baby out with bath water has never been effective. IMHO

5 + hours.

Maybe they will show the last hour.

If they do, you will miss seeing Al Sharpton, Jesse and Elaine Johnson!

All were excellent.

Elaine Johnson was off the charts.

48. Wonder if this guy will be speaking there?
http://thinkprogress.org/2005/09/28/compares-kkk/

Tennessee Rep. Stacey Campfield (R) doesn’t take rejection well. After the Tennessee Legislature’s Black Caucus turned down his two requests for membership, Campfield said:

My understanding is that the KKK doesn’t even ban members by race… has less racist bylaws .

-snip-

Or maybe he's up in Toledo at the other march?

65. That racist Repuke? Why would he be there?
"State Rep. Compares Black Caucus to the KKK, Demands Membership "

He also tried to push through a bill that limits liberal teachings at universities and compared his fight to the Civil Rights movement. The guy is obviously a loon that uses twisted logic.

Are you referring to this march? TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A neo-Nazi group will march next week through a Toledo neighborhood that they say has been beset by gang violence that threatens white residents...

I had high contact with the black community in Savannah, GA.

I met thousands of people. From January to November the number of people I met who said they supported * I can count on one hand.

Less than one hand.

I met exactly three African American people who said they supported *.

And I'm pretty sure one of them was kidding.
