List the names of pols and pundits who have been relegated to the great...
dustbin of irrelevance.

Let's make a list of people who no longer have any importance, although they continue to think they do. Tell us what knocked them down a notch or two, from some brand of relevance to complete irrelevance.

I don't know where to begin, the current political climate is so ripe for picking. I'm more interested in hearing what other DUers think.

2. Spiro Agnew.
He is a footnote in history. I always found him difficult to not dislike.

3. Mort Kondrake
Was originally one of the "liberal" panel members of the "McLaughin Group" in the 80s/90s. Currently one odious half of FOX's "Beltway Boys," playing the token moderate to Fred Barnes' conservative wacko. Frequently parrots right wing talking points and rarely challenges Barnes on issues.

I suppose one could through John McLaughlin himself into the stack of irrelevant pundits, although I hesitate to do so because I find him so entertaining. It's hard being relevant when you're on public television for thirty minutes a week. He peaked in the 90s when Dana Carvey's dead-on SNL impression of him blew his ego up to epic proportions. But he was the Chris Matthews of his day.

6. Bush I.
What losing to Clinton didn't do, his son did. Frankly, his son rejected him and his policies more thouroughly than even Bill.

It's a long story, but they all seem to have disappeared, rapture like.

16. Ford didn't pretend to want an ex-presidency.
No elder status statemenship, no huge charities, but lots of corporate boards and golf. Probably the lowest profile of any ex- president who wasn't dead. I don't blame the man. Is he dead, by the way?

He's a nothing. Nobody. Shouldn't even be discussed at DU except to be ridiculed.

14. But I think that's why.
Edited on Mon Oct-17-05 03:23 PM by Inland
Most posts can't easily incorporate terms like "ManDate" or "White House Correspondent and Gay Prostitute", which are too much fun to leave alone. If Gannon/Guckert didn't exist, we'd have to invent him.

On edit: The subject of Gannon came up legitimately today, IMO. When the news broke that no officials knew how Judith Miller got security clearance, I thought of Gannon. In a topical, conspiracy way.

13. Trent Lott
The 3rd most powerful pol fell so hard, he's been little more than a rumor in the Senate since. Then the hapless boob resurfaced on the national stage just to play a walk-on in Dubya's Katrina fiasco. I almost feel sorry for him.

15. Don't write Trent off!
Being "not in charge" at this point in time is a plus. Being officially on the outs with Frist and Bush when the shit hits the fan for those two is only going to help. The Miers nomination isn't his fault, the spending isn't his fault, and he can stand on the side and complain about Bush.
