For your history of Judith Miller's headline lies bringing us to war.
1. December 20, 2001, Headline,
"Iraqi Tells of Renovations at Sites For Chemical and Nuclear Arms".

Miller rolls out a new Iraqi defector, in the ripe tradition of her favorite, Khidir Hamza, the utter fraud who called himself Saddam's Bombmaker.

2. September 7, 2002: Headline:
"US says Hussein intensifies quest for a-bomb parts".

This one was by Miller and Michael Gordon, promoting the aluminum tube nonsense:

3.September 13, 2002, headline:
"White House Lists Iraq Steps To Build Banned Weapons".

Miller and Gordon again, taking at face value the administration's claims that it was "the intelligence agencies' unanimous view that the type of tubes that Iraq has been seeking are used to make such centrifuges."

4.December 3, 2002, a Miller Special, murky with unidentified informants:
"C.I.A. Hunts Iraq Tie to Soviet Smallpox".

Classic Miller: "The C.I.A. is investigating an informant's accusation that Iraq obtained a particularly virulent strain of smallpox from a Russian scientist who worked in a smallpox lab in Moscow during Soviet times"

5. January 24, 2003:
"Defectors Bolster U.S. Case Against Iraq, Officials Say".

Another Miller onslaught on the UN inspectors:

"Former Iraqi scientists, military officers and contractors have provided American intelligence agencies with a portrait of Saddam Hussein's secret programs to develop and conceal chemical, biological and nuclear weapons that is starkly at odds with the findings so far of the United Nations weapons inspectors."

6.
We'll leave al-Haideri in well-earned retirement and Miller heading towards her supreme triumph of April 20, 2003, relaying the allegations of chemical and bio-weapon dumps made by an unnamed Iraqi scientist she'd never met.

1. As I said elsewhere, the NY Times has never looked worse.
This is a huge blow to the paper's prestige and honor.

I will never read that paper the same way again.

3. Kind of amazing that this is the same newspaper which...
... printed excerpts of the Pentagon Papers, and revealed Nixon's secret bombing campaign in Laos and Cambodia.

But, the Times Co. has benefitted from de-regulation of the media, just like other corporations. They certainly don't want that Bush & Co. gravy train to be upset by a little truth.

6. The same paper
that swore to a housecleaning and resetting of priorities after the Jayson Blair fiasco just a couple of years ago. That hired Daniel Okrent for the new position of "public editor", who had little to say about Miller during his tenure, but chose to crap all over Krugman in his exit column. They've been strictly amateur hour through the entire Bush reign.

16. Correct. Whoever is in charge needs to terminate Miller and Keller
and anyone else involved.

I remember reading the NY Times supplement in the Gainesville Sun whilst a student at University of Florida in the late 60's and early 70's and during Watergate. They were top notch.

Now, I have ZERO respect for them.

Edited on Mon Oct-17-05 02:50 PM by gulfcoastliberal
Rumor has it they fucked when they both worked at the Washington bureau when Sulzberger's family made him work on the "shop floor" to learn the trade:

So why did it take so long to run an editor’s note? In the newsroom, there are several theories. The first, and least persuasive, is the Sulzberger factor. “There was always the sense, true or not, that she had a benefactor at the top,” says Seth Faison. When Miller joined the Times in the late seventies, she arrived in the Washington bureau at about the same time as Arthur Sulzberger Jr.—a recent college graduate getting hands-on experience in the shop floor of the family business. The D.C. office had only about half a dozen reporters under the age of 35, including Sulzberger, Miller, Steve Rattner, and Phil Taubman. They clung to one another

25. MORE Miller articles of interest here ---
She was reporting articles under the titles, 'A Nation Challenged' and 'Traces of Terror' that began to dig into the reports that Bushco's terror response was inadequate.

Then starting August 2002, she suddenly started a new series, 'Threats and Responses' that started proclaiming Saddam's nuclear capabilities.

Could it be that she was hitting too close to the core so the Bushies promised to give her special privileged info in return for stopping her investigations?

Sounds kinda like there might be a deal with the devil in here somewhere.

29. Judy in miltary uniform giving orders in Iraq???
From Talking points memo..

As Miller covered MET Alpha, it became increasingly clear that she had ceased to respect the boundaries between being an observer and a participant. And as an embedded reporter she went even further, several sources say. While traveling with MET Alpha, according to Pomeroy and one other witness, she wore a military uniform.

When Colonel Richard McPhee ordered MET Alpha to pull back from a search mission and regroup in the town of Talil, Miller disagreed vehemently with the decision—and let her opinions be loudly known. The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz reprinted a note in which she told public-affairs officers that she would write negatively about his decision if McPhee didn’t back down. What’s more, Kurtz reported that Miller complained to her friend Major General David Petraeus. Even though McPhee’s unit fell outside the general’s line of command, Petraeus’s rank gave his recommendation serious heft. According to Kurtz, in an account that was later denied, “McPhee rescinded his withdrawal order after Petraeus advised him to do so.”
