Paying for NYT Op-ed, is this new?
I only occasionally read it in the past - they offer it in the daily email and when you click on it they are saying you must subscribe. It's sneaky and doesn't sit well with me. Is there some other way to read Frank Rich's column from Sunday?

1. I think it started on September 1st.
It was widely publicized. Nothing sneaky about it. They want to charge for some of their content.

4. It wasn't explained in my daily Times online email
If they want people to pay for it they shouldn't put the headline in the daily. To me, it's sneaky. Bait and switch. And I can't afford another online subscription.

6. It was in my email.
They've been quite open about it.

It shouldn't be offered in in the Times email if it's not free.

9. Now I understand what you meant about the email.
I agree that it should be noted as subscriber-only content in an email.

2. Yes.
There are sites that post free links to the op eds, usually a day or so later. One is called Never Pay Retail, but I'm at work and don't have it bookmarked here.

3. Check to see if your library doesn't provide you with online access..

...to the NYT and lots of other newspapers and magazines. You might need a library card, but most libraries anymore have some fulltext databases available to people. That way, you don't have to pay. Your taxes already did.

5. They've been saying they're going to start charging for about 3 years now.

Not really a surprize.

10. Found this at Talk Left:
Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, the proprietor of the popular left-wing blog Daily Kos, said that come September, he'll stop linking to the Times Op-Ed pages. "I think this is the best way they can become irrelevant," said Moulitsas. "If my readers can't read it, why would I link to it? The key to blogging is that readers can look at the source material and make up their own minds." Moulitsas is a fan of Krugman's columns, but he said that he would not personally pay for the subscription service. "I don't think it's worth $50," he said. "There's way too much content out there for me to pay for any of it."
