another day of CNN
telling us they still don't know anything about what they are reporting.

BREAKING NEWS: BALTIMORE TUNNEL SHUT

WHERE : Baltimore
WHY: dunno
WHAT: dunno
WHO: dunno
HOW: dunno

journalism 101, you have to have 4 of the 5 to break any story. I am sick of cable news.

1. They're justing filling dead air.
You would think they could use that dead airtime to air pics of missing people or something.

2. better than FOX
which is what I get for US news here in the UK. Before the tunnel we've been waiting for a dam to break in MA. :eyes: And to all those good people here in MA...I don't want to dam to break, but FOX seems to be pushing it's going to at any moment.

3. Ha! "It must be considered a serious threat...
BECAUSE of the action they've taken'

followed by another idiot saying
"everything has to be responded to, because if you don't, and something happens, they're responsible"

dear Lord God.. do you suppose that their spirit guides spend all night trying to untie those knots?

6. What do you expect?
Being first is what is it all about. Now they can film the promo: When the Baltimore Tunnel was threatened by terrorists, CNN was first.

7. Infotaiment 101
Is there footage of whatever we will talk about?
Can we quickly make graphic full of alliteration? eg. "Tuesday Tunnel Terror!"
Can we speculate about what is happening or is it clear? Speculation preferred
Can we "stay with the story as it develops"?

Cable news hates facts -- they love missing girls in Aruba with no development or facts coming in.

9. Killing time ...
Deperately trying to track down clues to another bride (somewhere, anywhere) who's on the lam. That way they give themselves at least three days of something (of no consequence) to talk about, and don't have to be bothered with anything remotely resembling REAL NEWS.

After all, researching and reporting REAL NEWS is HARD WORK!!!

19. my apologies
yeah i agree....cnn's covering of it is rather...stupid. but from what my dad has told me, its a credible threat. and they wanted to get it all sorted out by tomorrow at 9 am. but now i dont think that'll happen

sorry, i confused the attack on the news coverage for an attack on the situation. i'm just really worried right now...mind's not thinking straight.

23. is this about right?
An informant told authorities late last week that a plot was in progress to blow up one of the tunnels under Baltimore's harbor, ABC News has learned.

According to the informant, six Egyptian terrorists were going to receive bomb materials that would arrive by ship at Baltimore's harbor in a container marked "Cocoa." The informant said the terrorists would then use the material to assemble explosive devices, which would be planted in cars as part of a plot to bomb one or both of the tunnels.

27. The technology of TV is driving us to distraction.
When my family moved to the woods of East Texas in 1950, we had a television set, because there had been broadcasting where we came from in California. I think there was only one station in Texas at the time, probably WBAP in Ft. Worth. I remember people coming over to the house in the evening (programming didn't start until 5 pm), my mother would make cocoa or popcorn, and families would sit an watch this enormous Crosley television set with a 10-inch screen. Programs were quaint renditions of what you might see on a stage, mostly live - I remember seeing Jackie Gleason fall and break his leg in the midst of a pillow fight.

In a couple of generations since then, we have a virtually unlimited feed of market-driven ideas, images and sounds 24 hours of every day. CNN had to come into existence, because a channel with up-to-date news and the flexibility to stay with an important story would be so much better than waiting all day for Walter Cronkite, right? And in the same quaint way, imitating what went before, CNN was all about THE NEWS for several years.

But Jesus, look at CNN now in the context of history. It's non-stop distraction: Larry King fawning over some faded celebrity, Nancy Grace pumping mawkish emotionality into the slightest local story, Aaron Brown waxing avuncular but falling far short of real journalism. And nobody cares, because we've all given in to the fact that it's just Television, and it doesn't matter that it doesn't matter.

55 years ago when my mother hosted an evening of television for people who had never seen such a thing, it was a curious event, an anomaly in the context of real life. Now it's non-stop distraction, and TV HAS BECOME the context in which people live and think.

Of course this is not original. McLuhan and Neil Postman have written clearly and eloquently about this. It's the modern way that otherwise sentient beings are enslaved.
