Anybody else drive a diesel? notice what's happened to prices lately?
last week I paid $3.05, twenty cents above gasoline. Today the cheapest I saw was 3.44, where gasoline was 2.71.

today I saw a Citgo charging NINETY CENTS a gallon more for diesel than for regular!

I haven't seen ONE station over the last three days that charged LESS than SEVENTY Cents per gallon more than regular

is this happening everywhere?

my VW dealer today said it's because of the winter heating oil futures, plus early reformulating

how can they get aWAY with this?

what must the truckers be doing?

see for yourself: chicago area gas/diesel prices

3. See if there's any biodiesel locations around
At this point biodiesel may be getting cheaper than regular diesel in some places.

4. there's one, about ten miles south....I'll have to check prices there
also, under warranty, so I dunno what they do about that, or if they can detect traces of soy in the diesel

have to check

point is, though, that this is being ignored in the media, and it's outrageous, to say the least

the impact on transportation industry/cost of living is going to be HUGH!

how come nobody in the trucking industry is raising holy hell about it?

8. VW approves B5 in all TDIs
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 08:12 PM by tammywammy
Check out www.tdiclub.com and you'll see there plenty of people that run B20 and B100 in their TDIs just fine.

If you take your car to service, there's no reason they'd look as what fuel you're using, unless you're there for a fuel problem.

VW will not cover any warranty work for bad fuel, regardless if it's bio-diesel or dino-diesel. Any car that gets bad fuel, gasser or diesel, there's no manufacturer that will cover the work.

If you're getting bio-diesel from a reputable seller, there shouldn't be a problem.

Edited to add: If you are running B100, need to take the car in for service and are worried about them "discovering" it, you can always put in a few gallons of dino before you get there.

10. thx....but I've noticed that it's very common for pumps to have NO
diesel rating numbers on the pump, and I have to go inside

half the time, the clerks have no idea what I'm talking about, so I leave

12. Oh yeah...can you direct me to a link or something that explains
the difference in B ratings, etc?

I did lots of great research before I bought.

mainly wanted an engine with very good mileage that would last for more than 200K miles, hence diesel

15. It's easy
B5 means 5% bio/95% dino. B20 is 20% bio/80% dino. B100 is 100% bio, 0% dino.

I highly recommend these links:

9. Well, FedEx has slapped a 13.5% surcharge on our shipments.
So I imagine the consumer will feel that pretty soon, because it's not just us, of course. It's system-wide.

6. Your dealer was right
Plus, my uncle works at a refinery and he was talking a couple of weeks ago about how diesel was going up, because of the reformulating.

I saw diesel for $3.41/gallon today.

Evenutally, the truckers will strike, the price is ridiculous.

BTW, my 06 Beetle TDI will be here in a couple of weeks. At least if I'm paying so much, I only have to fill up every 3 weeks or so.

11. The price of goods will go up, up up!
Trucks haul a great deal of stuff to grocery stores, retail, etc. If fuel prices increase, then that increase will be passed along to us.

Today, I was driving home and noticed that gas was down to 2.49/gal, and I figured I'd go ahead and tank up since it was cheap. Isn't that sad? 2.49-cheap!

14. It costs me over $100 to fill my tank
with it each week.

Just yesterday my farrier was talking about this. He has another client who does some work with fuel pipelines. He told him that part of the reason is that the pipelines that handle fuel are mostly being used for gasoline to try and keep the prices down after the hurricanes so diesel is getting pumped in in smaller amounts. I have no idea if this really makes any sense or not. He also told him to look for the prices to come down in the next month or so.

All I know is the biodiesel is more expensive right now but I am considering putting a tank at the farm and getting filled every month. I would much rather pay for something that my friends grow than continue to support the oil companies.

16. You have a diesel engine, that is a good first step
The next one is to start making your own biodiesel. It is very simple, cheap, and is better for your engine and the enviroment. The only modification that you might have to make is if you have neoprene fuel lines(rubber like material). If you do, then you're going to have to replace them with metal fuel lines.

Other than that, you don't have to make any further modifications in order to run pure biodiesel of your own making. A great book for getting starting is "From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank"<http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0970722702/103-7615108-3585411?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance> It is a great step-by-step book to making your own biodiesel.

And if you don't want to bother with having to cobble together a biodiesel "refinery" out of parts that you scrounge up on your own, you can buy complete kits that makes producing your own biodiesel easy.<http://www.biodieselsolutions.com/home/home.asp>

I highly recommend that you start making your own biodiesel. It is cheap(.70-$1.20/gal), improves your engines performance and lengthens its lifespan, and is much much easier on the enviroment. And hey, if you don't like smelling like french fries when you're motoring around, simply run your biodiesel through activated charcoal before the final rinse. Oh, and one further way you can offset your costs is to take the waste product from producing biodiesel, glycerin, and sell it off to your local soapmaker, they would love it.

The time to get ahead of the curve on this is now. You will save money and energy, and thus become part of the solution, not part of the problem.
