Why Cheney Outed Plame and Brewster Jennings--Great Read!!
Iraq, LNG, Credibility: As Plame Was Losing Her Cover, Cheney Was Losing His Power
Tell A Friend
First in a Four-Part Series

by Douglas Drenkow

http://www.opednews.com

As the office of the Vice President of the United States has become the focus of Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald's investigation into the Valerie Plame Affair, the question most asked by the pundits and populace at large is "Will Cheney be indicted?"

However, the questions that seem to be most on the mind of Fitzgerald are "Why would the Vice President order his chief of staff, I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby, and Presidential hatchetman, Karl Rove, to expose the identity of a covert CIA operative? Was this simply an attempt to discredit an Administration critic? Or was there more to it than that?"

While it is true that Richard "Dick" Cheney has been called the most vindictive man in Washington, he did not achieve the reputation as "the most powerful Vice President in history" -- even the de facto Prime Minister of the Bush Administration (although "C.E.O. of Geo. W. Inc." might be more appropriate) -- by being as reckless with his position of power as he has been with statements of WMD "fact".

No, this uncharacteristically ham-fisted action -- of exposing a CIA operative, which would predictably, and did ultimately, provoke a firestorm of criticism, including accusations of everything from obstruction of justice to treason -- smacks of an act of unmitigated desperation, by someone in power cracking under enormous stress, like President Richard "Dick" Nixon, three decades ago.

And in June and July of 2003, when Libby and Rove and perhaps others in the Administration were leaking the CIA identity of Valerie Plame to Judith Miller of The New York Times, Matthew Cooper of Time magazine, columnist Robert Novak, and others in the media, Dick Cheney was under incredible pressure from various quarters, both foreign and domestic; and the drastic action of outing Agent Valerie Plame -- and thus her CIA front company, Brewster Jennings -- must have been seen as having the effect of relieving a goodly amount of this pressure, at least from the perspective of the beleagured Vice President.

2. hmm -- natural gas... the same natural gas that will cost 50-90% more
this year.

more from the article...
In June and July 2003, such major American energy companies as ExxonMobil were scrambling to salvage historic, multi-billion-dollar deals that had just gone sour with the Saudi national energy company, Aramco, for some of the world's largest reserves of natural gas -- which, particularly as globally transportable Liquefied Natural Gas, LNG, is considered by energy insiders as the most profitable energy resource for the 21st Century -- and cutting Brewster Jennings, the eyes and ears of the CIA in Aramco, out of the picture would do nothing but simplify matters. But that wouldn't change the fact that these once-in-a-lifetime deals had gone bad on the watch of, and despite the good offices of, Vice President Dick Cheney, the American energy industry's chief representative in the federal government.

18. Basically
Brewster Jennings and associates was a CIA front company for which Valerie Plame worked. When she & her company were outed by Novak, all their work over multiple decades was destroyed. Very probably they had the "goods" on Cheney's crooked dealings over the years. DUers have debated the exact nature of theses crooked dealings.

Here is a classic writeup from DU's RobertPaulson on the matter, entitled American Judas.

10. good article
detailing Cheney's rise to power. Comments on his personality point to a ruthless arrogance:

"As the disaster has unfolded in Iraq, he has continued to insist against all evidence that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction, that the dictator was aiding Al Qaeda, that nothing the Bush administration has done was a mistake. Those who have known him over the years remain astounded by what they describe as his almost autistic indifference to the thoughts and feelings of others. "He has the least interest in human beings of anyone I have ever met," says John Perry Barlow, his former supporter. Cheney's freshman-year roommate, Steve Billings, agrees: "If I could ask Dick one question, I'd ask him how he could be so unempathetic."

12. It may have been his own...
... chutzpah, and not much else. The conventional wisdom is that he was chosen to pick a running mate for Bush, Jr., and he picked himself.

Bullshit goes a long way with the true believers.

14. Interesting light on Brewster-Jennings. I had assumed that it was just a
front as an energy company, and that Plame's identity as an energy consultant was also a front. But I guess they would have had to make the front realistic, and even engage in real business.

I think this article is attributing too much to Cheney's stress, and far to little to the growing evidence of a large scale conspiracy within the Bush regime, involving dozens of top officials, including Libby, Rove, Rice, Hannah, Hadley, Bolton, and others, the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans and even Rumsfeld, as well as characters like Michael Ladeen, Duane Clarridge, Larry Franklin and Harold Rhodes, and their dealings with Ahmad Chalabi and M. Ghorbanifar (the Iranian arms dealer). Apparently, Fitzgerald has requested an unredacted copy of the Italian Parliament's report on the meeting of Ladeen, Clarridge, Ghorbanifar, Franklin and Rhodes in Rome in December 2001, where the Niger forgeries were concocted.

Personally, what I think they were cooking up there was not just forged documents, but also a plot to plant WMDs in Iraq, for Judith Miller to "find". In this theory of Treasongate, the Niger forgeries were created, and the Niger allegation was planted in Bush's SOTU speech, in order to bait the CIA into taking a public position against there being nukes in Iraq, and then to trump the CIA and discredit them forever, when the planted WMDs were "found." This nefarious scheme was discovered and foiled--probably by Brewster-Jennings. And that is why the Bushites took such foolish risks--calling six reporters, for instance--in one week, in a panicky and precipitous effort to get Plame/BJ outed, disabled and silenced immediately. They feared exposure of their plot. (I think this is also why David Kelly, the Brits WMD expert, was killed four days after the Plame outing.)

That's the theory, and it's proving to be a pretty useful one (solves many mysteries in both the Plame and Kelly events). There are other theories about Treasongate, but in none of them does it come down to one person, or one decision. That just does not cover the facts.

Cheney's supposed medical ailments, and now, with this article, his "stress," cannot be trusted at this point, when they may be looking for a way to keep him out of jail (or use HIM as the fall guy, to protect Bush Jr. and limit exposures). I would put this article into a suspect category. Is this disinformation?

19. Check out this theory about the Brewster jennings connection:
Remember, Plame was being outed BEFORE Wilson's article. Cheney was spending a lot of time at the CIa. Did he discover that Plame and Brewster Jennings were on to something? Something VERY big? Bigger than yellowcake, bigger than the fraud about yellowcake...something big enough for two dozen of the highest govt officials to collectively put their pretty necks in a noose. here are some thoughts:

"Potomac Capital appeared on the radar screen of Federal investigators during the Iran-Contra investigation conducted in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Al Taqwa connection to weapons of mass destruction proliferation, Bin Laden, and George H. W. Bush and his business associates stands as another reason the George W. Bush administration leaked the CIA's Brewster Jennings & Associates counter-WMD network. The CIA counter-proliferation team was getting uncomfortably close to tying members of the Bush family and their business associates to the same financial networks that fund Osama Bin Laden and his "Al Qaeda" network.

Intel sources have also traced a possible second connection between the Swiss network connected to George H. W. Bush and other 9/11 hijackers.

The first connection concerned hijacker Fayyaz Ahmed and a US$50,000 check he received from a tranche connected to the Swiss network. The second is the listing of Ahmed Mesfer Ahmed Alghamdi as a shareholder of Al Taqwa on a Central Bank of the Bahamas document dated April 15, 2000. Ahmed Alghamdi and Hamza Alghamdi were two of the Saudi hijackers on board United Flight 175, which struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Saeed Alghamdi was one of the hijackers on board United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania after being shot down by US military fighter planes (according to an NSA employee who was on duty in the National Security Operations Center on the morning of 9/11).

According to the FBI, the Alghamdi hijackers used a number of aliases. Ahmed Alghamdi used the names Ahmed Saeed Saleh Alghamdi, Ahmed Mohammed Alghamdi, Saeed Alghamdi, Ahmed Saleh, and Juan Poncho Bennett. Hamza Alghamdi used Saleh Alghamdi Hamzah. Saeed Alghamdi used Mohsalih Alghamdi, Mokhlidmazid Almotairi, Saeedayed Alghamdi, and Saeed H. Alghamdi. Other Alghamdis wanted by the FBI for involvement with "Al Qaeda" include Nora Alghamdi, Ali A. Alghamdi, Abdulrahman Alghamdi, Othman Alghamdi, Sadda Alghamdi and Tareqsaeed Alghamdi.

Now, more information has been gleaned from knowledgeable intelligence sources about the secret UNOCAL, Enron, and Taliban negotiations over the Central Asian Gas pipeline (CentGas). The source of the $10 billion was the Saudi Royal family and the recipient was Enron's LJM1 off-the-books partnership, also known as LJM Cayman, LP. LJM1 was primarily set up to finance the CentGas pipeline deal. Convicted Enron Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Andrew J. Fastow was the managing member of the LJM1 partners. In addition to Barclays, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce was also allegedly used to transfer the $10 billion to the Enron account.

Two criminal investigations in New York are getting close to exposing a major Bush family and associates' international money-laundering operation that has spanned more than a generation and has been used to illegally fund US elections since the Nixon era."

21. Good question. I do not recall a specific account, just a suspicion
that there might be some "casualties". certainly, a big casualty was the covert operation that had taken years to develop...an operation that was looking deep into the Saudi oil and terror nexis. ???links to bin ladin. Bush 9-11?
Whatever it was was big.And it was totally derailed.
