High school radio station seized by Christian radio via the FCC
I am more enraged than usual now.

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=107694

Maynard High School's radio frequency, 91.7 FM, is being seized by a network of Christian broadcasting stations that the Federal Communications Commission has ruled is a better use of the public airwaves.

<Snip>

According to Magno, that ``opens the floodgates for any other station to challenge the station's license and take its frequency.''
Using a point scale that considers such factors as audience size, the FCC ruled the Christian broadcasting network the better applicant. WAVM is given 30 days to appeal, and has done so.

</done snip>

This is some bullshit.

4. Like we need one more Christian radio station. What a crock of
horse hockey. Shouldn't the FCC be applauding the accomplishments of a high school radio station instead of caving in to the Christion wing nuts once again?

5. This has been the law for decades. At Rice, KTRU had to up its
wattage to avoid being taken over by bigger/more powerful interests. Luckily, the University considered having a radio station a feather in its cap, so it was willing to pay for the increase.

10. From what I recall, the sitch was very different.
Another radio station on the same frequency (coincidentally, also 91.7) upped it's power, swamping KTRU's signal. KTRU complained, and ultimately a solution was worked out where the offending station paid for an upgrade of KTRU from the sub 2K watt tx to 50K watts. Quite the increase in power.

8. This Is Going On All Around The Country...Maybe In Your Area
There's a company known as "R B Schools"...a fundie group that has been going after High School and college radio licenses and frequencies around the country.

Many of these channels are stations that the local school district either can't afford to program full-time or it's being done to harass the local school board.

There's a lot more info about this here:
