"There has never been a hurricane like Wilma before. With an unbelievable round of intensification that saw the pressure drop 87 mb in just 12 hours, Wilma smashed the all-time record for lowest pressure in an Atlantic hurricane this morning. The 4 am hurricane hunter report put the pressure at 882 mb, easily besting the previous record of 888 mb set in Hurricane Gilbert of 1988. Since no hurricane hunter airplane has been in the eye since then, Wilma may be even stronger now. The eye diameter of Wilma during this round of intensification shrunk as low as 2 nautical miles, which may be the smallest eye diameter ever measured in a tropical cyclone. The only eye I could find close to that small in the records was a 3 nm one, the Category 4 Typhoon Jeliwat in 2000. It's amazing the hurricane hunters were even able to penetrate the eye--it's really tough to hit a 2 mile wide eye when you're flying crabbed over at a 30 degree yaw angle fighting horizontal flight level winds of 185 mph and severe turbulence. This is an incredibly compact, amazingly intense hurricane, the likes of which has never been seen in the Atlantic. The Hurricane Season of 2005 keeps topping itself with new firsts, and now boasts three of the five most intense hurricanes of all time--Katrina, Rita, and Wilma."


the "good" news is that he thinks it will be a 2 or weak 3 when/if it hits Miami/Ft. Lauderdale

which means a 1 or a 2, maybe even a tropical storm, when it hits us over on the southeast coast.

its the storm surge and the rain that mad ethat so bad...

I was hoping that the oncoming cool front would weaken it by the time it hits Florida. Still hoping...

taken as a denial of global warming. I think he was truly freaked out by how quickly it got so strong.

The reason I say this is that he is definitely a lefty. One of his post-Katrina blogs was completely anti-Bush and called for wholesale election reform. A bunch of freepers who frequent his site were pissed.

I know one of his wunderground partners quite well, although I haven't met Dr. Jeff personally. They are definitely liberal and are certainly not deniers of climate change.

And it is well worth the $5 to join their site for no ads and faster radar (and no, I don't make commission, I just love their site :) )

to see more and more of these "freaks of nature" as the changes accelerate.

Like others here, I'm praying this will weaken a lot before landfall. I was reading Masters' blog earlier and saw that he doesn't expect it to weaken drastically as it crosses Florida if it passes over the Everglades, so the best hope for the Miami area is that wind shear will weaken it while it's still over the Gulf.

lets see if it turns against the wind and wabbles into a petrolium refinery area again

these things can cause earthquakes and if the air is heated above a hurricane it can be turned into a Mega hurricane.. it can be steered and directed

the soviet union has been developing these things since the 50's we are just starting ot learn to spell it.

Nuclear weapons are obsolete .. worthless in light of scalar weapons. a drop in the bucket compared to what scaler can produce in destructive energy.. or creative energy..

In the Pacific they have typhoons (which I think is a hurricane in the pacific). Are typhoons ever more powerful than hurricanes?

Their peek intensity level may be higher (have no idea) but I don't see them hitting land any harder than atlantic or other ocean storms.

Since it specifically says no other readings have been taken since. . . I am just thinking it might be something akin to meter failure...Impressive numbers, just thinking to wait before taking it as fact.

(Though it seems to be a tad larger now than it was two hours ago. Or did it already go through an eyewall replacement cycle?)

That can't be a faulty reading, and it's the other side of the record-low pressure.
