'Raging Granny' Gets Marine Recruitment Letter

Thursday, October 20, 2005

(10-20) 14:18 PDT Albuquerque, N.M. (AP) --

Sally-Alice Thompson had to laugh when she got a letter from the Marine Corps' commanding general, telling her the military "is in need of your service" and inviting her to find out more by sending in an enclosed card.

"What else could I do? I mean, I'm 82 years old," Thompson said.

Not only that, Thompson is a well-known local peace activist who is a charter member of the Center for Peace & Justice in Albuquerque and belongs to Veterans for Peace and Raging Grannies.

So instead of sending in the card, she plans to visit the Marine recruiting center with other Raging Grannies, which Thompson describes as "a group of women unhappy about wars of aggression and about nuclear armaments."

snip...
She began questioning government actions when the United States went to war in Vietnam. She's since taken part in the Great Peace March of 1986 across the United States, participated in a similar march from Leningrad to Moscow the following year. She's been in more than a dozen marches since President Bush took office and went to Crawford, Texas, in August in support of anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan when Sheehan tried to talk with the president on his vacation to Texas.

1. Well, for the record I got a letter from the Navy today outlining
all the benefits in going to "work" for the Navy. They mentioned that they saw my resume online and thought I would be an excellent recruit. They are so desperate they completely skimmed over the years of experience, hard living and working a wide variety of jobs for long periods of time to correctly assess my age and/or job qualifications.

I would be an excellent recruit except I don't take orders well, a tad (okay, more than a tad, I'm a grandma, too, for Pete's Sake) too old, don't like guns, marching, submarines or dressing like everyone else. I believe with all my heart their Commander in Chief is a thief, liar and murderer so it would be difficult (read that as impossible) to not tell him and every single person above me in rank the truth every chance I got. I do like boats, the sea, scuba diving, etc. but I generally like a nice, balmy breeze, sugar white sand and a cabana boy to truly appreciate the full experience.

Guess Chimpy and the Navy are going to have to learn to get along without me.

2. *lol* Too funny. It's like the time that the debt collector called my
house and tried to settle an account with my 3 yo son.

We got 6,000,000 peeps serving time...all we need is about 200,000 to get our Mil up to snuff. Serve 4 years and knock off 20 years from the sentence... a 5 to 1 ratio.

Raging Grannies can fight better than Bush and Rush but I think they paid their dues already...
