The New Superfoods - Apples, Cinnamon and even CHOCOLATE!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9711645/site/newsweek/

"Chocolate. Perhaps the best news is that dark chocolate (but not milk chocolate) is now a super-food. "It's not just the antioxidants that make it healthy," says Pratt. Dark chocolate contains substances similar to the heart-healthy compounds in green tea."

A little "fluff" here and there is good for the collective soul of DU now and again, right? And, of course so is a little dark chocolate. :P

1. At first I thought it was a joke
because the original work was reported by a professor at (Milton) Hershy Medical School (Penn State's Med School) - the school was a bequest from the trust fund established by chcolate company founder Milton Hershey.

Cinnamon is an old Northern India-Pakistani-Kashmiri folk remedy that seems to lower cholesterol and reduce the "insulin resistance" that characterizes Type 2 diabetes.

4. Nutmeg in large doses is hallucinagenic...
Perhaps that is one reason.

8. Interesting. Though there is a tribe that drinks a chocolate derivative
and are in excellent health, in spite of many other dietary no no's. This tribe is free of cancer, heart disease and many other ills.

7. I have taken to buying 70% or 86% dark chocolate
and having a little bite each day. A bar lasts me a week or two. But OH, what a delightful daily indulgence. Yummmmmmmmmmm.

11. Coffee contains more antioxidants than green tea
Recent studies indicate coffee is surprisingly good for you in a lot of ways, most of them related to caffeine compounds - just like tea and dark chocolate.

Another surprise (to me): pomegranates are an outstanding source of antioxidants. Like oranges, blueberries, kiwis, strawberries...I'm guessing the rule of thumb should be, the tangier the fruit, the more antioxidants it provides.

17. Apparently so
Both regular and decaf contain the same amount of antioxidants, and studies show both help protect against diabetes and certain cancers:

21. Check the baking section of your supermarket
They'll have semi-sweet M&M Minis, although they'll say they're for baking.

26. Keep your head down, 'cause
The National Baking Supply Misuse Committee, or NBSMC (under Homeland Security, of course) patrols the baking isles to make sure that nobody buys those bags of mini M&M's or mini Hershey Kissess for immediate consumption.

And all kidding aside, they might be a little bit more expensive. Maybe fifty cents or so...

15. My dad is 81, and he has had Type II dabetes since I remember
He eats his desert every day, a small square of dark chocoloate... the actual dose recommended by this study, and his heart is doing fairly well... I smile when I see this... he was told by a doc many, MANY years ago to do that... a Mexican doc who also used some of the ancient Aztec remedies before the new gen drugs came to be.

I'll have to look for a book I own written by the Padres, in the 16th century, on the medicinal plants of Mexico... I used it for my thesis and it is in storage right now

16. My docs disagree with each other on chocolate and cinnamon
My internist (a lunsman) says they do no good.

My cardiologist (a Punjabi, with beard, turban, mini-sword tie bar, bracelet) says that unsweetened, milk fat free chocolate, and cinnamon are old Indian remedies, and "they can't hurt."

27. my husband will testify on the cinnamon/blood sugar issue.
He is practically a missionary on the subject.

As a type II diabetic, he measures his blood sugar several times a day, and the cinnamon has helped him a lot.

He has met a couple of insulin dependent diabetics with brittle tendencies who have had very good results with cinnamon..blood sugar much more level and stable.

now chocolate too!!!

Rock ON!!!

30. I finally have learned to not over-indulge in chocolate.
Every day I enjoy one or two squares of organic dark orange-flavored chocolate. It really is very delicious and gives me the pleasure and the "fix" of "sinful" chocolate.

I do believe that in this manner it really is a health food.
