Fitzmas Makes the Wikipedia! Democratic Underground & DailyKos mentioned!
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 06:48 PM by cat_girl25
Fitzmas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Fitzmas is the name given by some liberal bloggers to the atmosphere of excitement and anticipation preceding the conclusion of Patrick Fitzgerald's grand jury investigation into the Plame affair. The word is a portmanteau of Fitzgerald's name and "Christmas". Examples are found at Democratic Underground (<1>) and Daily Kos (<2>).

Said excitement and anticipation has caused many parodies of traditional Christmas songs to be written and posted around the liberal blogosphere. There are also several versions of "'Twas the Night Before Fitzmas" (based, of course, on the classic Christmas poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas"). The term became sufficiently widespread to draw derisive attention from a columnist for the conservative magazine National Review. <3>

First use of the term "Fitzmas" was on October 6, 2005 by SpiralHawk on the Democratic Underground website. <4> Since then Fitzmas spirit has spilled off the web and into the real world, as evidenced by this Fitzmas decoration.

He or she or it or whatever started the thread that led locically enough to the coinage of Fitzmas.

And it happened in my The 12 Days of Christmas Indictments thread

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4988201

It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Everywhere you go.
Who's gonna do five-or-ten?
We're thinking once again
Of handcuffs and of orange jumpsuits aglow.
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Indictments on every score
But the prettiest sight to see
Is the scowl on Darth Cheney
At the slammer's front door.

A warrant or writ, a subpoena that fits
Is the wish of Barney and Ben;
The thought of Turdblossom hung up like a possum
Is the hope of Janice and Jen;
And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for court to start again.

It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Everywhere you go.
There's an defendant who doesn't want to tell;
One in the White House as well --
The felony kind that doesn't mind the law!
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Soon the bells will start
And the thing that will make them ring
Is the indictment that we sing,
Right within our hearts!

But I am keeping all the Vast Sums of Royalty Profits for myself.

Now that I am going to be Filthy Rich I plan to run away from DU to join The Republican Party Culture of Corruption so I can spend All My Money on Myself and BENEFIT from a Massive Tax Cut for the Wealthy.

Many political scientists agree that since the Democrats can't win at the ballot box because voters distrust their policies and leadership, Democrats are now trying to seize power by other means than convincing Americans to vote for them.

Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 07:18 PM by SheWhoMustBeObeyed
The John McCain entry has been rewritten to completely downplay his involvement with the S&L bust and bailout. If I went through and read all the GOP entries I'm sure I'd find more of the same revisionism.

When I google for info, I won't click on a Wikipedia link.

Edit to add: But good on ya, Spiralhawk! I was wondering where the term originated.

Ohhh…
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,

We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
Cause Scooter and Karl were bad.

bush*:
I lied about the WMD,
Somebody snitched on me.
Then I claimed I’d make ‘em free,
Somebody snitched on me.
Told the press bout Valerie Plame,
Got someone to leak her name.
Holy hell, I have no shame.
Somebody snitched on me.

DU Chorus
Ohhh…
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
bush*caused a war and we’re mad.
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
Cause Scooter and Karl were bad.

Libby:
I wrote a letter to Judy.
Somebody snitched on me.
The aspen’s more than just a tree.
Somebody snitched on me.
We turn in clusters on our root.
Our defense is nearly moot.
Most of us will get the boot.
Somebody snitched on me.

DU Chorus
Ohhh…
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
bush*caused a war and we’re mad.
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
Cause Scooter and Karl were bad.

Bolton, Rove, Cheney et al:
No yellowcake bought from Niger.
Somebody snitched on me.
Our time’s up, the end is near.
Somebody snitched on me.
Cooper, Novak and the press
Leaked her name and what a mess.
Now we fear we must confess.
Somebody snitched on me.

DU Chorus
Ohhh…
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
bush*caused a war and we’re mad.
We’re getting somthin for Fitzmas,
Cause Scooter and Karl were bad.

57. I wish more DUers would edit Wikipedia occasionally
Fitzmas didn't magically "make" Wikipedia. The article's there because somebody got off his or her tail and wrote it. I added the link to National Review, because I thought it was notable that we'd gotten under the conservatives' skin. Then other DUers reverted the incessant RW vandalism.

Long after we've opened our Fitzmas presents, Wikipedia will be the site of plenty of other RW attempts at censorship and disinformation. I just reverted yet another attempt to suppress the story about the attempt to broadcast the anti-Kerry film Stolen Honor right before the election. That persistent editor will return to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolen_Honor and to his constant attempts to smear Kerry. People even try to remove the alcohol and cocaine passages from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush (which could use work in other respects as well). There are many other examples of conservative bias that need to be corrected. (But don't worry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_DeLay still includes this week's mugshot!)

On a more positive note, Wikipedia can disseminate information that the MSM somehow can't find room for. Right now the article about Pat Buchanan -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Buchanan -- is about four times as long as the one about John Conyers -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Conyers . Isn't there information to be added about Conyers and other good people in Congress? And that's not to mention your local heroes, the progressive mayors and state legislators around the country who don't even have articles now.

Here's the context: Wikipedia is the 45th-most-visited site on the Web (ahead of foxnews.com, ahead of usatoday.com) and it doesn't sell advertising. All of Richard Mellon Scaife's money can't buy him any space on Wikipedia. Information gets there when volunteers are willing to spend the time and effort to write suitably encyclopedic content.

Forgive me if I'm coming on too strong, but, frankly, I'm puzzled: This thread has 50+ posts commenting on Wikipedia content, but only a minority of those DUers have done anything about Wikipedia content.

Of course, if you think the freepers are smarter and more dedicated than we are, and can write better, then ignore the above and give up on Wikipedia. (Pardon the ham-handed reverse psychology. I'm hoping it'll motivate some people.)

I will have to visit and input on that site more often. Thanks for the scolding.

61. Oops....
I didn't mean to establish scolding as a Fitzmas tradition! On the other hand, I suppose it's somewhat like the "Airing of Grievances" that's part of the Festivus celebration: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivus#Main_elements_of_Festivus

Seriously, I know some people would like to contribute to Wikipedia but have trouble getting oriented. Any DUer is welcome to PM me or email me at JamesMLane at aol dot com if you need help figuring out the software or Wikipedia policies. The main policy to remember is to be bold in editing -- anything you foul up can be fixed. If your choice is whether to add good content in a messed-up format, which someone else will have to clean up, or to sit there dithering at your keyboard and post nothing, then by all means add the content. We have plenty of people who never even heard of Karl Rove (seriously!) but who are tireless tidiers.

62. Actually, it was kind of slow by our standards
Last month, an activist named Walter Wolfgang stood up at a Labour Party conference to criticize Blair's policy concerning Iraq, and the security people muscled him out the door (Wolfgang, that is, not Blair). We had Wolfgang's bio -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Wolfgang -- posted within 24 hours. The Times (London) was impressed, and headlined its story "Hero's return (and Wikipedia entry) for OAP heckler": http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,17129-1803377,00.html

69. I posted these elsewhere, but...
Fitzmas is a-coming

Fitzmas is a-coming,
Karl's chins are big and fat,
There's indictments a-plenty
Cause Fitz smelled a rat,
If you've worked at the White House,
He'll indict you too.
If you give him any static,
He just might bust you.

*********************

Did You Hear What I Heard?

Said the caller to old Bryan lamb,
"Did you see what I see?
There in Washington Bryan Lamb,
Did you see what I see?
A charge a charge, directed at the Reich
With Fitzgerald ready to indict,
With Fitzgerald ready to indict,."

Said the left wing caller on the line,
"Did you hear what I heard?
Ringing through DC, sheepy boy,
Did you hear what I heard?
A wail a wail floating on the breeze
With old KKKarl Rove scared enough to pee,
I get tired of you bullshittin' me."

Said the caller,"And one other thing",
"Do you know what I know?
You remind me of Wolfe and Larry King,
Do you know what I know?
A chimp a chimp shivers in the cold--
Make them give back everything they stole,
Make them give back everyhing they stole."

Said Larry King to the sheeple everywhere,
"Hear the stuff that they say?
There's the cry for impeachment in the air,
Hear the stuff that they say?
The chimp, the chimp's screwing us tonight,
He has brought us poverty and blight,
He has brought us poverty and blight"

not the general feeling of anticipation and celebration before that day. Ah well.

79. Sorry, my mistake
Byron York is a National Review columnist, but the "Fitzmas" column of his that I linked to appeared in The Hill. Still, it wasn't just a passing mention. He titled his column "A liberal's carol: We wish you a merry Fitzmas". He quoted some of the DailyKos posts about Fitzmas (no DU, though).

It was a pretty fair column, actually. York got in his praise of the White House, but he also quoted Marshall Wittman of the DLC making a good point. From York's column:

Marshall Wittmann of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, which is normally at war with the progressive lefties at the DailyKos, seems, at least at the moment, to be on the same wavelength when he suggests that any indictments will expose the fundamental hypocrisy of Republicans.

....

“All of the pack that relentlessly pursued Clinton will kvetch about the ‘criminalization of politics,’” Wittmann continues. “They will see no irony or hypocrisy in their complaint because this is a fight about preserving power, not maintaining consistency.”

York's column: http://www.hillnews.com/thehill/export/TheHill/Comment/ByronYork/102005.html

78. Let us not forget our Jewish DUers!!!!
OH! PATRIKKAH!!!!

Patrikkah, Oh Patrickkah
The sweet celebration
Around the tube we gather
in complete jubilation

Many are the reasons for good cheer
Now that Indictment Season is here
Many are the reasons for good cheer
Now that Indictment Season is here

Together, such pleasure
for what the future brings
So hear us rejoicing and merrily voicing
the Patrikkah song that we sing
So hear us rejoicing and merrily voicing
the Patrickkah song that we sing

Oh Patrickkah, Oh Patrickkah
The Festival of Joy
A holiday, a jolly day
for every girl and boy
Watching for frogmarches, all week long
Cheering for Fitz, singing songs
Watching for frogmarches, all week long
Cheering for Fitz, singing songs

Indict them, tonight then
The thieves all in a row
Retell the story, election thefts so gory
And dance by the flickering glow
Retell the story, election thefts so gory
And dance by the flickering glow!
