Bushes Bring some Fashionable Fun
Bushes bring some fashionable fun

10:33 AM CDT on Sunday, October 23, 2005

By ALAN PEPPARD / The Dallas Morning News

Afghani writer Khaled Hosseini (The Kite Runner) and author Tom Wolfe will provide the beef at Monday night's Celebration of Reading Dallas, while fashion designer Arnold Scaasi will provide the sizzle.

Once again, Barbara and George H.W. Bush will host the gathering of authors at the Meyerson Symphony Center to raise money for literacy initiatives. Mr. Scaasi, who has worked with first ladies dating back to Mamie Eisenhower, will read from his book, Women I Have Dressed (and Undressed!) (Scribner, $25). When the designer first met Mrs. Eisenhower at the White House, she offered him a Coke, and then assured him that it was not a federally funded beverage.

At a recent book festival, he revealed, "She said, 'We buy our own Cokes – we don't get them from the government,' because there was some concern at the time that the government was spending too much money."

The rising star of the Bush dynasty, Dallas lawyer George P. Bush, will attend with his wife, attorney Mandi Bush.

Here's the link but there isn't more content to this story.

3. There ought to be a law that
prohibits any member of the so-called Bush Dynasty from ever having anything to do witht he public trust.

5. The Kite Runner is a must read. It is a powerful look at so many
significant issues, ranging from the most hurtful prejudice to forgiveness of the most generous kind. It takes place in Afghanistan around the time of the Soviet invasion. It is heart-rending, but quite relevant. Please read it if you have not. This is the first time I cried shamelessly while reading a book in years.

8. Me too. Read it on a plane.
The flight attendant looked at me, but then saw the book and smiled.
Don't read it in public if this will embarass you. Good chance you will be dabbing your eyes through much of it. And it's hard to put down once you've started reading.

7. I guess that Wolfe will be getting the knees of his white suit filthy...
as he fellates Poppy.
Give it up, Tom. There is NOTHING iconoclastic about propping up the power structure

9. What could possibly be fashionably fun about the bushes?
Between Barbara and Laura they have set fashion back 30 years. Also, g.w. bush at a Celebration of Reading is a howl, because he admits he doesn't even read newspapers.
