Official ‘Ritter and Hersh on CSPAN2’ thread
I’m starting this 3 hours before show-time so everyone has a chance to rearrange their schedule. (for instance, I will be taking my afternoon nap at 10:30am  )

On Sunday, October 23 at 4:30 pm and at 10:00 pm

Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence Conspiracy to Undermine the UN and Overthrow Saddam Hussein
Scott Ritter and Seymour Hersh

Scott Ritter talks about his new book, "Iraq Confidential," in which he argues that the Clinton administration, working through the CIA, thwarted the efforts of UN weapons inspectors in Iraq during the 1990s. Mr. Ritter, an inspector between 1991 and 1998, argues that President Clinton's real interest in Iraq was not the elimination of weapons of mass destruction but rather regime change. Mr. Ritter discusses these and more recent developments in Iraq with New Yorker reporter Seymour Hersh, author of "Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib." Both men answered audience questions following their discussion.

Scott Ritter, former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq, is the author of "Endgame: Solving the Iraq Crisis," "Frontier Justice: Weapons of Mass Destruction and the Bushwhacking of America," and, with William Rivers Pitt, ( :woohoo: WILL! ) of "War on Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn't Want You to Know." Seymour Hersh, who won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1970 for his coverage of the My Lai Massacre, is the author of "The Price of Power: Kissinger in the Nixon White House" and "The Dark Side of Camelot."

Book Description
Scott Ritter is the straight-talking former marine officer who the CIA wants to silence. After the 1991 Gulf War, Ritter helped lead the UN weapons inspections of Iraq and found himself at the center of a dangerous game between the Iraqi and US regimes.
As Ritter reveals in this explosive book, Washington was only interested in disarmament as a tool for its own agenda. Operating in a fog of espionage and counter-espionage, Ritter and his team were determined to find out the truth about Iraq’s WMD. The CIA were equally determined to stop them. The truth, as we now know, was that Iraq was playing a deadly game of double-bluff, and actually had no WMD. But to have revealed this would have derailed America’s drive for regime change.
Iraq Confidential charts the disillusionment of a staunch patriot who came to realize that his own government sought to undermine effective arms control in the Middle East. Ritter shows us a world of deceit and betrayal in which nothing is as it seems. A host of characters from Mossad, MI6 and the CIA pepper this powerful narrative, which contains revelations that will permanently affect the ongoing debates about Iraq.

BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
http://www.buzzflash.com/premiums/05/10/pre05137.html
Unlike members of the Bush administration, Ritter actually had military experience and a history of inspecting for WMDs in Iraq. He was one of the senior UN weapons inspectors in the '90s, was a Marine, and an adviser to General Schwarzkopf in the first Gulf War. Hey, those are some credentials compared to Vietnam evader Bush and 5-time draft deferred Dick Cheney, not to mention draft dodger Karl Rove.
But the more knowledgeable you personally are about something the Bush Administration is creating lies about, the greater the need for Karl Rove to discredit you.
In this book, "Iraq Confidential," it's payback time.

My football game will even be over by then!

I've had a question on my mind ever since I found out that the PNAC group had written a letter to Clinton. If Clinton knew about the PNAC plans, why didn't he do something to stop those neocons? Maybe Scott Ritter and his book will answer this for me.

22. Thanks! Already heard the Dem Now interview. It was absolutely damning!
Ritter laid as much history down as possible in the time he had.

The gov't tried it's best to bury him. What it says is that the truth will prevail. He's honest. And by being so, they had nothing against him.

What I got from that interview is that our politicians are corrupt. The workers are doing their jobs, but the people who depend on votes to keep their jobs, are liars and cheats.

Iraq was clean. They played dirty, but lost. And it was long before Bush showed up that we knew it. How Congress rolled over is beyond all comprehension.

50. The biggest difference between the cheney junta and the old Repug
eastern establishment is that the old repugs desired stability and order above all else. Capitalism and the global financial system needed it.

But the military/energy complex that cheney works for feeds off chaos. They make their money off destruction and human misery. They get paid by middle-class taxpayers to destroy things and then fix them back up, with billions of dollars available to be siphoned out of the treasury. And chaos in the Middle East gives them justification to go in and grab the increasingly precious oil to sell at exorbitant profits to the same taxpaying suckers. Sure beats trying to make money off windmills.

Ritter says not to vote for anyone who voted for the Iraq Resolution. Clean them all out. Albright and Sandy Berger should also be indicted, he says. Seymour Hersch said that anyone who stood up and opposed the Iraq war right now would win the next election. Ritter said Hillary was a chickenhawk. Said 9 or 10 neocons run the entire government.

Ritter also said that Al Gore was a hawk, and would have attacked Iraq. Said Gore was for regime change, too.

Just because you are for regime change does not mean you are for a war to accomplish that goal. Hell, I was for regime change, but not by killing the people of Iraq to do it. The only way for regime change is to make the people of Iraq strong enough to be able to accomplish this themselves.

53. Ritter admits, he's a Republican
however, he is not a neocon--what did he say? "The neocons are like parasites feeding off of the host." Gore probably would have demanded increased weapons inspection, maybe bombings and sanctions; but not outright war, especially without the UN. The "new" Gore is absolutely opposed to the war. I believe Gore has grown and learned these past years and has strayed away from his DLC leanings. I don't agree the Democrats are soft on security as Ritter suggests. He is military, and he must know that many Democratic leaders have past military experience, especially in war. And, I do remember Clinton, with a Republican Congress, attempted to enact a bill to monitor terrorist money laundering through banking institutions and it was shot down by the Republicans.

55. And the best part of the whole show
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 06:35 PM by Hardhead
IMHO, was when Scott Ritter said that we have to follow up at the polls. We have to tell all the people on both sides of the aisle that anyone who voted for this war has to go. All of them on both fucking sides. We have to make it unconditional: we will not tolerate those who vote for wars of choice, whether they are republicans or democrats.

This transcends party politics at this point. This disease is eating both parties, and a culture of tolerance of aggression in the desperate hope of a bare majority is exactly the sorry game that led us - both sides - to this impasse. It's a game we can never win, a race to the bottom that we should be smarter than to play at all.

Some principles must never be compromised if one is determined to retain any semblance of self-respect, any claim to true humanity. It's time to toss aside the triangulators and look to people with the courage to stand up and say NO. Hersh concluded with this very point: that things will change again, as they always do, and whoever comes along first and opposes this revolting status quo will find himself or herself atop a very strong wave of discontent.
