Will Vermont secede from the U.S?

http://peakoilanarchy.blogspot.com/

Jumping From the Sinking Ship of Empire: Vermonters Move to Secede From USA

James Howard Kunstler, author of the book about Peak Oil The Long Emergency, will be the keynote speaker at The Vermont Convention on Independence to be held in the House Chamber of the State House in Montpelier, VT on Friday, October 28th, 2005. Sponsored by the Second Vermont Republic, the convention, which will begin at 9 am and conclude at 5 pm, is open to the public and free of charge. This historic event will be the first statewide convention on secession in the United States since North Carolina voted to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861.

Organizers of the convention say it has two objectives: First, to raise the level of awareness of Vermonters of the feasibility of independence as a viable alternative to a nation which has lost its moral authority and is unsustainable. And second, to provide an example and a process for other states and nations which may be seriously considering separatism, secession, independence, and similar devolutionary strategies. The Second Vermont Republic describes itself as "a peaceful, democratic, grassroots, libertarian populist movement committed to the return of Vermont to its status as an independent republic as it once was between 1777 and 1791."

11. Just remember that people do not need a permit in VT
to carry a concealed weapon. Reason enough for me to move there.

24. Yep, there's no reason for a rural state to need a permit to carry
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 01:20 PM by Mr_Spock
Now in states with cities - or at least the cities themselves - it is imperative that the massive number of criminals within the city not be allowed to carry too easily. Even with VERY strick 1 year mandatory laws in Mass there was a bit of harassment by punk gun owners when I lived there.

They just increased min wage there from $7 to $7.25 an hour.

Maybe I could get a job cutting firewood. There is going to be a big market for the stuff all this winter.

42. it won't.- trust me. As a native granite head
the 'free-staters' aren't going to make it here-
We might be stone faced, but we aren't stone hearted.
And believe it or not, many, many NH folks care about the environment.
We kept seabrook offline alot longer than anyone would have ever thought- Not so Vermont Yankee in Vt.

I suggest we take Vt. N.H. and Me. and bond with Canada-

Killington has officially asked to secede to N.H.- citing too many restrictions. Sadly, I wholeheartedly approve of a sales, income or both tax by the state of NH, because our lack of any is attracting the kind of folks we DON't need- those who value money, and 'things' above people.

29. Define big
If it means a few people grousing around on the internets, that's not big.

When the state militia is willing to fight the federal army for secession, that's big.

34. No, "big" is always in relation to "small"
It's not a "few people grousing on the internet" anymore. The "Free the Bear" people, for instance, have an actual, physical headquarters.

The discussion isn't about violent secession but a peaceful and political process.

no offense but what exactly does anyone do up there?

i guess i'm still ticked by all the yankees not wanting to re build louisiana when we DO serve a purpose -- port, oil, refining, etc.

i would love to see some "independent" vermont try to make it on its own, it's ridiculous on the face of it

38.  pitohui yes & I happen to love New Orleans.
I think it could open the door to a lot of "yankees" who are fed up with paying more to the federal govt than we get back, while other states get a free ride. Yet we are constantly being insulted about our lack of morals, among other ridiculous things. Personally I love New Orleans & I wish my tax dollars would be going ( and you can bet they will be going) to someone I trust to rebuild it, then to Halliburton. I fear, the looting has just begin with bush's buddies in charge.

I wish you luck, in New York we were also promised money from bush, which never came, and its been 4 years. I'm surprised that you think "yankees" don't want to help...if anyone has been dissing Louisana, it's been republicans. Either way, I wish you the best.

43. An independent Vermont would thrive.
Any resources, goods, and services it couldn't immediately provide within its own borders could be supplied by international trade. Freed from the constraints of a Republican government in Washington, DC, it could realize its full potential.

Of course this could be said of any state whose electorate would choose a left-of-center government. Clearly the best option would be for all 50 states to stay together and elect and demand a competant federal government.

Don't let your animosity towards wingnuts who don't want to rebuild the Gulf Coast cloud your judgement. If it was solely Vermonters who chose our elected officials at the federal level, you'd be in a lot better fuckin' shape than you are now.

Interesting.

By the way, my ancestor was a Whig in the NC legislature and he had the votes NOT to seceed. However, when they fired on Sumter in SC, the votes fell apart due to the fact both Va and SC had seceeded and we would have been surrounded.

I guess I'll wait to see what happens with Fitz and the investigation first.
