My radical right-wing, fundamental christian, redneck to the bone brother took the afternoon off to take the family to the county fair (ultimate redneck entertainment venue). I showed up just after lunch to check my email and get a quick DU fix. So I had the unbelievable luck to be standing there while he heard his ultra-hero Rush deliver the "I'm just a poor victim" speech today. By way of the greatest luck, I'd just read the transcript linked on DU. So as Rush was whining down, I started commiserating.
"Poor Rush. Been there, done that. I got hooked more than once after my own back surgery. Poor guy. The temptation is incredible when the pain is so bad and the pills are right there. I really feel for Rush."
With the subtle message, and yeah, this worn out old hippie recognized the dependancy and dealt with it before it became a problem. Over and over, I didn't say it, but it was there. Once again, the Redneck had no response, and Rush has taken the first step down the path to becoming a failure in my brother's eyes. Wish me luck. If I can turn this one from the dark side, anyone can be saved.
