Would Oxycontin cause a lack of hunger?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 09:37 PM by sgr2
I'm wondering if this is why Rush lost so much weight.

Then

2. No. However . . .
. . . addicts don't like to eat because it ruins the high. I doubt that OxyContin is the only drug that Rush is on though. I'll bet it comes out that he was doing some sort of upper to counteract the sleepy effects of the Oxy which, like heroin, makes its users nod. (Fall asleep sitting up.)

3. Yes, but
it also slows down the metabolism. SO unless the addict radically eats less food, he's going to gain weight.

7. Uppers. Whatever he was using . . .
. . . to keep himself awake during his show or out in public. Speed is a diet drug. Or coke. Or whatever it was he was using and I'll guarantee he was using something besides coffee to stay awake. Another thing. He was probably eating laxatives like candy to ward off the constipation.

20. That sounds a lot like the combination that killed Evis.
Opiates and Speed with laxatives thrown in for good measure.

18. You have some basis for that?
I suspect that you do not. Weight loss even to emaciation among opiate addicts is quite common. Weight gain among opiate addicts is not a phenomena of which I am aware. How do you think the term "heroin chic" came to be?

Please show a cite for opiate addicts gaining weight. I suspect you can't.

Could explain why he needed those implants.

6. From my extremely limited personal experience...
Not really a lack of hunger...

After five days on pain killers I felt so bloated from the side effects of the opiate that I didn't want to eat any more.

Five years on them and I'd have been downright svelte.

8. I too think severe constipation caused from chronic narcotic use would...
...tend to cause the appetite to be depressed. And therefore could explain the weight loss.

9. Remember Heroin Chic?
That gaunt, pasty, woefully undernourished look? People with a serious opiate monkey tend to forget about eating. If they're not blissed, they're jonesing. Hunger pangs are are a mild inconvenience next to those physical symptoms.

10. The drugs would also probably
make him thirsty. And I wonder if fluid shifts would be part of the cause for his loss of hearing. Severe fluid shifts can starve the inner ear (from what I remember in anatomy and physiology) causing hearing loss.

The constipation must have been awful for that much drug.

It'll be fun to watch all the ditto-heads go through Rush-withdrawal.

vomiting. To throw-up can give the abuser a "high"

13. Nausea and vomiting are side effects.
He wasn't only taking oxycontin, however. The other drugs might have made the nausea worse.

I remember that after my major surgeries (3) I was sent home with Percodan or Percocet. I'm not sure if that is similar to the stuff Rush is addicted to...but I always hated all of those painkiller meds (codeine, etc.)--and I am no teetotaler! They just made me feel really sick.

I think Vicadin is essentially codeine. Anyway, I found them all disgusting.

I couldn't take that stuff for more than a day and a half. Yeah, it made my tooth stop hurting, but AY-YI-YI!!!

22. Vicodin is Hydrocodone, not Codeine
Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 03:05 AM by REP
Codeine, oxycodone and hydrocodone are different but similar analogs. Oxycontin is a long-lasting form of oxycodone; hydrocodone is in Vicodin, and codeine is in Tylenol #3 (etc).

These drugs cause many to become nauseous and constipated. Oddly enough, though, it can remedy the nausea and vomiting that accompanies distension of the omentum. Narcotics are antiperistaltic agents, and are often used to treat serious bowel disease.

Limpballs, of course, had neither serious pain nor serious bowel disease. People using these agents for severe, chronic pain are very unlikely to become addicted.

17. Constipation's the thing...
Opiates (heroin, codeine, oxycontin, etc) relax the muscles in your intestines. My understanding is that the severe constipation that results often stops addicts from eating a whole lot.

Then again, he's been full of shit for years.
