"Church backs rights for gays"
BANGOR - Episcopalians on Friday overwhelmingly endorsed equal rights for gays and lesbians at the their annual convention held at the Bangor Civic Center, but stopped short of urging residents to vote no on Question 1 on Nov. 8.

The original language of the resolution, which included calling "upon all citizens to vote no this November 8th on Proposition #1," could have affected the tax-exempt status of the Diocese of Maine.

"Our chancellor pointed out that by urging people to vote one way or the other, we were functioning as a ," said Heidi Shott, communications officer for the diocese. "So the resolution was amended."

Question 1 on the ballot will read: "Do you want to reject the new law that would protect people from discrimination in employment, housing, education, public accommodations and credit based on their sexual orientation?"

1. aaah...my old hometown newspaper...well..it's the one we used
to get in my hometown even though my hometown wasn't Bangor. Gay rights was a huge issue when I was up there lots during the 90's also.I can remember Carolyn Cosby and Concerned Maine Families. I see things haven't changed much. I wonder how it will turn out.

2. Well, count on me to do my part to protect equal rights. I hope that
we will win out on this one, but there's such a large fundagelical base here that it could be close. :(

9. yeah...southern maine usually supports our side of the issue
the more rural areas up north, like where my parents live in Millinocket, tend to vote with the fundies. at least they did when i was up there all the time in the 90's. I used to be registered to vote up there up until just recently, mostly absentee because i was all over the place while in the navy.

10. We have pockets of fundies and progressives here at the
cusp of downeast. Here in Castine we have a mix of: Academy middies who tend to vote Repub (but not all of them do, by any means), some Repub summer folk and retirees who vote up here, and then a fair number of progressives.

And in nearby Orland it's weird how you can pass one house that has bible verses posted to the mailbox and then pass by another one that wants ** impeached. :P

5. That sounds promising!
I hope other churches will wake up too.

My mother-in-law belongs to the United Church of Christ and received a five-page document in the mail that begins:

"On this July fourth, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ has acted courageously to declare freedom, affirming marriage equality, affirming the civil right of same gender couples to have their relationships recognized as marriages by the state, and encouraging our local churches to celebrate and bless those marriages."

Right on! Let's hope a trend is starting.

6. The UCC has been great about same gender marriages for a long
time in terms of performing services and whatnot. I think it is great that they are encouraging their members to work for equality and recognition state-by-state for same-gender marriages.
