Iraq constitution ratified in referendum
Tue Oct 25, 2005 12:15 PM BST

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqis have ratified their new constitution, the results of a referendum showed on Tuesday.

Electoral Commission officials told a news conference 78 percent of voters backed the charter and 21 percent opposed it.

Of 18 provinces, only two recorded "No" votes greater than two thirds, one province short of a veto. Turnout in the October 15 referendum was 63 percent, commission officials had said previously.

U.S. officials sponsoring the political process had described the turnout, in which many of the disaffected Sunni Arab minority took part, as a success for Iraqi democracy.

2. Two provinces voted no by 2/3 majority, one "swing province" voted no
but not by 2/3 majority.

Sounds like American style democracy to me.

worth the paper it's written on.

8. I agree. The 'insurgency' (I hate using that word) is wholly separate

from the de-facto civil war we created by our illegal invasion and occupation.

The only thing the Sunnis, Shia, and Kurds hate more than each other...

is us.

6. This will be a major blow to the insurgency, just like handover of
sovreignty, uday and qusay's deaths, saddam's capture, vote for governing council, vote for interim government,

what else?

11. Ya, the infinite amount of al-Zarqawi #2 and #3 dudes "allegedly"...
captured, maimed, or killed.

The thing that will really bring the downfall of these bad-dudes was the capture of the so-called Islamic militant website's webmaster a couple weeks ago.

9. barely
One "swing province" voted no, but not by the required 2/3. Two other provinces voted no by more than 2/3.

The requirement for this thing to fail was three provinces voting no by 2/3.

That means that statistically, 65% of IRaqis could have voted against the thing and it still could have passed.

10. I don't know for sure, I think so. Not that it matters though, the Sunnis
are totally opposed to it, and if they're not represented (which they aren't, despite last minute compromises) and because the "constitution" can be modified at any time, you'll see an escalation of the low-grade civil war that's happening right now.

14. And this will have what affect on the "insurgency" in Iraq?
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 06:41 AM by ClintonTyree
Zero, none, zilch, nil, nada, goose-egg, nothing........ it won't change anything. Well, it might. I might make the different factions MORE emotionally charged and determined to wipe each other out. "Freedom is on the march" in Iraq! :eyes:

bush style freedom and democracy mean nothing.
