Female firefighters find they can take the heat
Female firefighters find they can take the heat in Iran
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/1019/p01s03-wome.html
By Scott Peterson | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

KARAJ, IRAN – The rewards are great - and the disappointments as powerful as any felt by firefighters around the world.
But at Station No. 9 in Karaj, west of Tehran, a small unit prides itself on being like few others: the only squad of women firefighters in the Middle East.

...

Women are still subject to a strict Islamic dress code here, though at the moment it is loosely enforced. But there is a women's police division. Women parliamentarians and even vice presidents and a Nobel Peace Prize winner voice their opinions loudly. And in Iran's roiling political atmosphere, women can be criticized as harshly as men

...

Finding a balance between Islam and gender issues is easier in Iran than in some other Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia, where women are not allowed to drive, much less hold office.

...

"I've seen them in action and they are good, they are strong - sometimes they are better than the men," says Mr. Aghayari. When they are in protective gear, fighting alongside the men, he says he can barely tell the difference.

"Physically we can manage it, we don't think we are anything less ," says Zeinab Karimi. Her father's tales of his work as a firefighter shaped her as a girl. When ads for the positions appeared, he mentioned them to Karimi, who had never thought she'd fight fires herself. "We believe in our abilities."

1. Fire fighting is more about brain than brawn anyway.
I've seen big men lose their cool at a structure fire, while the women are putting on airpaks to go inside and offensively fight the fire.

It's more about brain than brawn. At fire academy, most people can pass the agility tests. It's the cognitive tests that most fail.

3. Loosing their cool isn't related to intelligence if that is what you
mean by brains. Demeanor might be a more appropriate term (and also does not exclude women). There are some people that panic in stressful situations and some that don't and it isn't related to how smart they are.

Brawn is also required but that's tested before a woman becomes a firefighter.

8. Brains as in knowing how to apply which tactics in which situation.
Knowing whether to aggressively attack a fire or to defensively fight it.

I come from a long line of firefighters. Indeed, I is one. :D

4. I would guess the women that sign up to be a firefighter
are above average strength. You're not going to see kate moss in a fire suit carrying an axe. As long as she could pick me up and carry me out, what do I care what sex they are?

5. Gender isn't an issue.....
The woman on our volunteer dept is as tough as nails - I'd bet her against any man, any day. Brawn can come in handy, but brains are the real life savers....

9. Amen.
As a woman on a volunteer fire department, thank you for saying that.
