ACLU Calls “Historic Ruling” a Step Toward Government Accountability for Abuse and Torture of Prisoners

NEW YORK - A federal court today ordered the Department of Defense to turn over to the American Civil Liberties Union more than 70 photographs and three videos depicting abuse of prisoners in U.S. custody at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The release of the photos has been stayed for 20 days pending the government’s expected appeal.

8. For now you can use their site to Tell Your Congressperson to Stop Torture

Tell Your Member of Congress to Stop Torture

In a stunning vote to restore the rule of law to stop the government from using torture and abuse, the Senate voted 90-9 for an amendment by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to ban the use of torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment. The McCain amendment must now pass the House of Representatives, and the Bush Administration is promising to fight it every step of the way. Your action is needed to make sure the McCain amendment becomes law.

Write to your member of Congress and urge that the House of Representatives insist that the McCain amendment should stay in the Defense Department appropriations bill.

5. I hope that y'all saw the PBS Frontline on the abuse of prisoners.
It was down and dirty, going all the way to Rumsfield and Cheney and the generals, who were pressuring the ones just below them since Rummy was putting the screws to them.

9. From Raw Story:
snip.......
As part of the FOIA lawsuit brought by the ACLU, a federal judge recently ordered the Defense Department to turn over photographs and videotapes depicting the abuse of prisoners held by the United States at Abu Ghraib. That decision has been stayed until October 26. The government has not yet indicated whether it is going to appeal the court's decision.
