Singing parrot regales Pennsylvania Senate, hits sour note w/GOP leader
HARRISBURG, Pa. - A yellow-naped Amazon parrot from the National Aviary in Pittsburgh sang "How much is that doggie in the window?" and "Alouette" to surprised senators Tuesday.

The parrot, named Groucho, sat on a perch in a Senate visitors' balcony and sang in a warbling, croaking voice for several minutes after Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll, who presides over the chamber, formally recognized the bird and an aviary staff member with it.

Immediately afterward, Sen. Robert C. Jubelirer, the chamber's president pro tempore, was seen scolding Knoll on the Senate floor.

4. Pennsylvania parrot bursts out in song in PA Senate

Singing parrot riles legislature

HARRISBURG, Pa: A singing parrot in the Pennsylvania legislature irked the nerves of a key state senator, setting off a dispute with the lieutenant governor.

Groucho, a singing Amazon parrot from the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, was invited, along with Patrick the Penguin, to add color to debate over funding for the bird park, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.

State Sen. Robert Jubelirer, the top senator in the legislature, approved the animals' visit but publicly took issue with Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll when she allowed the bird to sing.

7. Well now you know why our PA Legislature is well-known for being like...
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 02:12 PM by demodonkey
...blackstrap molasses in an ice storm! ;-)

When our lead Senator takes time like this to "squawk" about a singing parrot, no wonder we are having such a fight to get a bill passed for voter verified paper ballots and other needed reforms.

9. That senator needs to get real. What was she supposed to do, order the
parrot to be choked so it would shut up? Hey, shit happens. Parrots sing and sometimes say naughty words. Senators sometimes get their panties in a wad over trivial shit happenings. Grow up Senator.

11. I have two parrots one speaks and sings well and the other not so well.
I have no idea when it will burst into song or go off on a long spell of reciting everything in it's repertoire.

this one speaks

this one has to listen

This was just an excuse to post the photos I have finally figured out how to do it.

12. I have a double yellowhead, too, but no red-lored. :)
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 02:34 PM by Ladyhawk
When my double yellowhead decides to vocalize...well... :D Your guy looks a lot like mine. Yeah, I know parrots are supposed to look alike, but I can tell differences between individuals. Your guy has a blockier head, for example.

Gabby:

Gabby ringing his bell:

By the way, your Amazons are lovely. Amazons are my favorite family of parrot. I've worked with nearly every kind of parrot you can imagine. I've bred and raised African greys, Senegals and Meyer's parrots. Amazons remain my personal favorites, even though they tend to bond strongly to one person.

14. They certainly seem to bond to one person and both have bonded to me.
How long have you worked with parrots, I could use some hints. I ended up with both because they had been abandoned and was asked if I could take them temporarily. I have had the red lored for 12 years and the double for about 5.

I can't help posting photos just learned how to yesterday, I am computer illiterate and took me a while.
