He gets to spin the story now. The Democrats forced her to withdraw from the nomination by requesting too many documents.

45. Well let me clarify
THis was a shitty situation for him anyway; when the right wing turned on him he knew she had to probably go. That said, if he had had to do it himself, that story spins itself. Plus it would be admitting a mistake, which he hates doing.

Now he had a chance to tell a lie; he'll say that we (Democrats) forced her to withdraw. Of course people on this board aren't going to buy that. And a lot of mainstream peopel won't buy it. But his base just might; particularly if he puts up the sort of neo-fascist that they want.

as a matter of fact, watching CNN right now they haven't mentioned the Democrats once, just the fact the Conservatives were having shit fits about it. Trent Lott seems to like the situation. Candy Crowley reporting that "the White House has a tin ear", they won't listen to anyone else's opinions.

Many conservatives were very concerned about Miers.

But even if Democrats were the only ones requesting documents, my reply to that would be "What was stopping you from releasing those documents? What exactly is on those documents that you don't want the public to see?"

It looks to me like the Christian right "won" too, but I think this may well cause a lot of resentment, leading to more criticism of the administration. We can spin it as a cave-in to the evangelicals--makes Bush look weak, and he has a pathological horror of looking weak.

69. This could backfire for the WH
First of all, I'm glad Bush's attempt at hiring another crony was slapped down even though I think the Conservative outcry over Meirs was ridiculous...she really wasn't any less qualified than Roberts and he got a free pass.

The good thing about this is that the era of kissing Bush's ass is over. His next nomination will endure far more scrutiny from both Parties than before.

This couldn't have happen at a better time. I don't think the WH will be able to dig out of their hole after the incitements come through and to make matters worse for Bush, his next nominee for SC will shine the light on the splitting Republican party. Will he choose a radical to appease the Evangelicals or will he choose a highly qualified judge with a paper trail to appease everyone else?

With Rove out of the picture, I doubt Bush can make a savvy political choice. He wanted Meirs very badly...I think this is going to get VERY interesting.

81. The Right use to take orders from Bush.
Now, Bush takes orders from the Right. It wasn't too long ago that anything Bush said or did was gold for these people but now it's different.

The Republican party is starting to pull in different directions. The religious right is extremely loud and demanding, the neocons are currently running the show and true Conservatives have been rendered powerless for the past 5 years. It's a train wreck waiting to happen.

76. I don't know
I'm betting they wanted this. Now they can pick an extreme right judge that will unify the base again. And they're hoping the hearings and rhetoric will be so strong it will take the spotlight off the indictments in the news.

83. They can't control an extreme judge
I think the whole point behind choosing Meirs was so that they could try to control the SCOTUS as much as possible. Bush and the neocons aren't religious fanatics, they're power fanatics who were very good at exploiting the religious fanatics for the past 5 years.

Roberts was a breeze to get through and he had virtually no paper trail either. I honestly think that Bush didn't expect the criticisms from the Right on Meirs.

91. But their base has been exposed as pathological
Completely nutso for abortion ban.

And most people don't want that.

So, Bush comes through with an obvious abortion banner, and he looks like he caved to the radical Christian theocrats. Not the strongest position to go into a filibuster fight with, especially with Republican ratings down to the barest essentials among overwhelmingly pro-choice independents. This is a disaster for Bush.

How can this be? Now we're going to have to settle for second best?

Really, this woman had no business being nominated in the first place. This is a real slap in the face to bush, there's no way they can spin this positively and it was HIS OWN PARTY that crucified her!
His own party back stabbed him and made him look like the complete jerk he is. :)

I wonder who we'll se nominated NOW though? I'm sure it will be some morally reprehensible, Reich-wing bush-bot and the Democrats will have a real fight on their hands. This should get interesting.

84. Why the celebration? Now we're going to get a Scalia clone.
This is not a victory, and another nominee is going to be a far greater defeat than Miers would have been. This is bad news.

88. Nah........
she would have done anything "the most brilliant man in the world" wanted her to do. She was a non-thinking, bush-bot, a rubber stamp for whatever they told her to do.
We're not losing anything here, we're not gaining anything either. It was going to be a fight either way and now we'll KNOW our enemy and we'll make damn sure the American people KNOW who this person is as well. No one knew who Miers was, she was a blank slate that they could have written anything they wanted on.
There was always going to be a fight, now at least we'll be able to recognize the enemy.

98. That is all bullshit
this was a ploy by the shrub to take the heat off of the Plame investigations and the indictments and news that surround them. I believe they never intended for Harriet to be a Justice, I think they wanted to stir up controversy and take away from what is really coming. They knew all of Harriet's works, etc would be raked over the coals with a fine tooth comb. They expected this...

I would say Harriet has stepped down just in time for the indictments and watch and see what shrub does next in the way of a nomination and when he chooses to announce it....

She sucked as a nominee anyway!
Neocon callers to c-spn think this is a coup for dubnuts. Supposedly he will now nominate a real conservative and get what he wanted in the first place. I don't know how to read the spin yet, but if the next appointment sucks, the dems will have to use every means they can to stop it.

Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 09:18 AM by Leopolds Ghost
This was a smart move for Bush to make politically, and you know it.

Encouraging the enemy to do what's rational and in their best interests
is stupid and counterproductive of us.

Instead of engaging in political "judo" perhaps the folks who think
this is a win for us should consult Sun Tzu sometime.

Sure Bush made a mistake. Now he has corrected it and will solidify
his standing with his base, and destroy the political impetus behind
the Fitzgerald investigation by putting DEMS on the defensive. That's what a filibuster is y'know -- defense, not offense. This came at the worst possible time for Dems, and that's no accident. Rove is clearly still in control (and will remain so.)

What ind of judge we get next is irrelevant. Bush's base will NOT be split in '06 like folks were hoping.

Miers would have split the republican coalition wide open, whether or not she voted in a 5-4 minority against Roe some day three years from now. Instead you'll get no Roe and a unified base to boot.

That means Repubs will close ranks around the President and use their levers on the media to turn the Fitzgerald investigation into a media circus. I predict Republicans will gain seats in 06 out of misguided sympathy for Bush "under too much assault" from Dems (thanks to the new confirmation battle) and from Fitzgerald. People have a short memory.

out of committee to be eligible for an 'up or down' vote on the Senate floor. That would've been more embarrassing for His Fraudulency. I just hope he doesn't try and stick a fundie in there quickly to win back his 'base' during his time of trouble with Fitz. If he appoints a wingnut for 'life' now, they will foam at the mouth in their support for him and their reichteous (I know it's misspelled) attack on anyone who tries to hurt the Baby Jeebus King George.

It's filibuster time, and if there are indictments tomorrow, all gentlemen's agreements (the 14 who've agreed to save the filibuster but only for extreme circumstances) are off the table. This crook should not be allowed to get one more person on the SCOTUS, he's had his shot.
