my suspicion is that he they want to pick a new nominees that appeases the right, but winds up in a filibuster and eventually another loss.
My guess would be the right wants Owen and Brown. I don't think they will get either because if Bush wanted someone like that he would have nominated them instead of Meiers.
But here is the other thing Bush himself may see the writing on the wall and is now going to be consumed with Plame Gate and building something of a legacy.
All he really has to worry about is the reelection of RW senators in 2006. He may be of the view: Screw them...They hung me out to dry,.
I think he has got to put a woman on the court. What about Christine Todd Whitman?
