CNN's White House Correspondent John King: Bush is in a Box
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 11:44 AM by VolcanoJen
Appearing opposite Wolf Blitzer and Candy Crowley, he just elegantly summarized the way that the President is boxed in on every one of these issues. To summarize, here's what he told Wolf, while Candy just simmered silently:

* Bush can't blame the Democrats for Meirs' failed nomination, because the Democrats held their fire and let the Republicans doom Bush's pick.

* Bush can't blame God for the hurricanes he was slow to respond to.

* Bush can't blame anyone but himself for the Iraq War. It's his war, his alone, and he has to take responsibility for it.

* Bush can't blame Democrats for the imminent indictments of his senior staff, since Patrick Fitzgerald is not a partisan "Independent Counsel" as Ken Starr clearly was, and since the CIA pursued the investigation, not the Democrats.

* Bush can't blame Patrick Fitzgerald, since he's on the record having praised him, and since he was appointed by Bush loyalist John Ashcroft*.

John King ended this rather perfect list by saying, "The President is on his own on almost every political level now, he has completely boxed himself in, and he has nobody to blame but himself."

* DUer tk2kewl offers one minor correction for John King: Deputy AG Comney appointed Fitz after Ashcroft recused himself from doing so.

The people running the government, criminals as they may be, are about to be forced out. Leaving a dry drunk actually in charge. What if something happens that requires quick thinking, actual decision making or real leadership? What if he's hungover at the time? The man has his finger on the red button and a direct line to God. I really, really, really hope this isn't a case of be careful what you wish for.....

37. At this point, I doubt the military would obey him.
Generals love their country too, you know.

And given the White House Meltdown, and the sour attitude many senior officers of the US Armed Forces have developed toward Bush vis-a-vis his misguided Iraq war, they could, and likely would, defy him, if he gave a knee-jerk, dangerous order.

I have more faith in them than I do him.

59. I hope you're right.
I've generally felt that way too, but he's been forcing out any generals that don't drink his Kool-Aid too and now has yes-men mostly in charge of the military. Plus, this White House doesn't seem to have an equivalent of Nixon's Al Haig, someone reasonably sober watching over things. But from my experience in the army, I do have a unique respect for generals; either something happens when they get that star or else it takes something extra to get it, but I saw a clear distinction between generals and all other officers below that. OTOH, that was 35 years ago and based on experience with one general.

21. On the Miers nomination, the Dems kicked Bush's Machiavellian ASS.
Many of the "pundits" tried to pass Bush's missteps on Miers off as "Oh, his "brain," his "boy genius, architect, man with the plan" is DISTRACTED by the CIA Leak Investigation."

BALONEY.

We HEARD walking Xanax bottle Laura Bush say that opposition to Miers was "sexist." It didn't stick. It was Bush's BASE that decided "that dog won't hunt."

The Dems DID hold their fire, and the decision to do so was BRILLIANT.

As Tweety...of ALL people...said last night on "Hardball," when asked about this being a "difficult" week for the White House: "TOUGH! They brought this on themselves! Talk about a self-inflicted wound!"

:patriot:

32. Sorry I missed Tweety saying "TOUGH!"
That's so absolute and true.

Bush is the President, the most powerful man in the world, an office he sought willfully, fought tooth-and-nail for, and then sought again.

It's time for him to take his lumps. Conservative Bush apologists have reached their moment of truth... the perfect storm of collapsing support and confidence in their President.

TOUGH. That's damn straight.

41. It was a laugh-out-loud moment.
I don't recall who he was talking with. Might have been Norah O'Donnell...she was all over MSNBC yesterday.

But she said something like "In what is proving to be a very difficult week for the White House..."

...and he just jumped in and blurted out "TOUGH!"

He said that Bush, Cheney, Rove, Libby have had the information Fitzgerald's been digging for ALL ALONG, that Bush could have stepped up and demanded the truth but instead decided to sit back and "let the system work," and that any pain the White House is going through right now is self-inflicted.

HOWEVER...Matthews has also been asking how Bush can regain his "nobility" for the last two days, so in Tweety Land, it all sort of balances itself out.

:silly:

Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 11:57 AM by Beetwasher
The Dems strategy, one of seeming appeasement, is one that the Right and Rove would NEVER EVER consider. Never. That sort of subtle tactic and maneuvering is beyond the comprehension of their reptillian "sensibilities".

The only strategy they have or ever use is "step on the gas and run over anything in the way". And while that may work for many things, ultimately your gonna hit something immovable.

Politickin' sure is fun these days.

Look... Democrats can win when they strategize.

We beat down Harriet Miers by holding our fire and allowing Republicans to do all the dirty work.

We beat down Social Security reform... with a rather velvety hammer, if you ask me.

We beat down Legalized Torture... because we ally with John McCain only when it is politically astute and crucial that we do so.

And, I think this is important, and has been generally overlooked... yesterday, Rep. George Miller (D-CA) quietly forced Bush to flip-flop on the Gulf Coast Wage Cuts, and thereby saved Davis-Bacon, by working the smoke-filled back rooms of Washington. It was genius, and he proved then when Democrats stand up for the rights of the American worker, THEY WIN.

Why Bush balked on the Gulf Coast Wage Cut - A Toast to Rep. George Miller

IMO - the ONLY way for the Republicans to go down is from "friendly fire". If the Democrats are involved in any way - they so good at shifting blame they could find a way to whine weasel their way out of another mess.

Bush referred to his cue card to determine which reporter was to be called on next, questions sent in advance. John King was #5, or something to that effect. Bush, and King, thought it was funny at the time. Now that we see how the propaganda works behind the scenes, with a dozen or so military props being coreographed by Allison Barber, one can't help but sense that it does have a USSR-esque odor to it.

67. Lock box! Lock box!
of course all the other coverage I've seen praises him for whatever (solving the Miers problem, being "dignified" during the investigation, you name it.) Nice to see a bit of reality. The entire reality is that he should be in the same box as Rove as he lied to Congess/American people in SOTU about facts HE KNEW THEY WERE UNTRUE

75. Maybe...
... if this kind of situation had befallen him when he was, say, SEVEN, like most people, we wouldn't have been in this mess to begin with.

Time to realize that old, crazy, heathen-Science idea: everything has a consequence, a reaction, an effect.......

Most people realize this, and deal with the Freudian psychological implications, much earlier than their 50s.

79. "Bush is in a Box" When I read this, I thought of that pulp thriller...
The one where the surgeon, a "collector", removes the woman's limbs and keeps her in a box.

I guess in this case, Karl Rove, "the Architect", would play the role of the surgeon.
