What is the difference between perjury and false statements?

What is the difference between perjury and false statements?
I thought perjury was making false statements. Is this just a matter of semantics, or is it more distinct than that? Any legal eagles know?

1. Perjury is false statements under oath
False statement to federal authorities that are not under oath is a separate offense. Libby lied to the FBI when he was not under oath and to the grand jury when he was under oath.

3. As I understand it...
perjury would be lying directly to court officials under oath. False statements would be information contained in communication sent to investigators or attorneys. It might be comments made to investigators instead of said in court.

5. Another Distinction
is the difference between perjury and lying under oath, namely that perjury is a false statement that is pertinent to the case, whereas lying under oath may be about something marginal. That's why Clinton was not guilty of perjury, because Monica Lewinsky was only brought up tangentially in the Paula Jones case.

I'm not sure if "lying under oath" is the same as the "false statements" charge Fitzgerald has made.
