Apparently libby knew he was guilty of leaking the name
and didn't know he could get away with it, so he lied about it. What kind of shitty legal advice was he getting back then anyway?

1. It's called invincibility
The Bush White House had gotten away with everything, he figured.

2. He probably lied
originally when Ashcroft was the Investigator and thought the investigation would go away. Then when Ashcroft recused himself...he repeated the error.

3. You don't really believe that, do you?
These people (Libby, Cheney, Miller, Hadley, maybe Rove) sat together in a room and conspired to go after Wilson/Plame. Libby is a traitor, not a deer in the headlights.

6. I'm saying that he lied about something he didn't have to lie about
He could have gotten away with it if he told the truth, that he outed her, the law was badly written.

7. I think he's better off lying than admitting that he's a traitor.

8. According to the record, he is both. The indictment clearly
states it was libby who outed Plame.

4. Probably no legal advice
People who are arrogant think they can fool everyone else. Only after they get caught do they go see a criminal lawyer, who would have told them in the first place to never, ever talk to an FBI agent about anything.

Scooter should have retired, taken his pension and bought a ranch in New Mexico when he had the chance, leaving his lawyer behind to say, "Sorry, Fitz, 5th Amendment" and that would have been the end of it.

But, arrogance always brings them down.

I just read yesterday that Libby was "shopping" for a criminal lawyer. If he had any brains he would have done that 2 years ago before answering a single question.
