Kristof, in Sunday's New York Times: Cheney, come clean - or resign.
Not exactly a liberal, Nicholas Kristof lays it on the line in the Oct. 30 New York Times. No further comment necessary. Yours are welcomed. Hope you can access it, but here's an excerpt, anyway.
http://select.nytimes.com/2005/10/30/opinion/30kristof.html

Since Mr. Libby is joined at the hip to Mr. Cheney, it's reasonable to ask: What did Mr. Cheney know and when did he know it? Did the vice president have any grasp of the criminal behavior allegedly happening in his office? We shouldn't assume the worst, but Mr. Cheney needs to give us a full account.

Instead, Mr. Cheney said in a written statement: "Because this is a pending legal proceeding, in fairness to all those involved, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the charges or on any facts relating to the proceeding."

Balderdash. If Mr. Cheney can't address the questions about his conduct, if he can't be forthcoming about the activities in his office that gave rise to the investigation, then he should resign. And if he won't resign, Mr. Bush should demand his resignation.

1. I just got through writing a new Monday Neil Lisst comic
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 08:53 PM by Neil Lisst
... laying out the Fitzpatrick case and asking why Bush has not already fired Cheney and Rove both.

I decided Monday we needed to address the indictment and editorialize directly. We'll go for funny again on Tuesday, but Monday, I'm calling for Cheney and Rove to be fired, and Bush to come clean.

I'll read Kristof and see what he says. Thanks for posting it.

I was preparing to post about his awful oped's of late, but never finished. I'll look forward to tomorrows paper. I had pretty much given up on him, especially with regard to the environment and the Bush administration.

5. Yes, this is stunning from Kristof. Not to be ignored.
Kristof has hardly been harsh on the BushBots. This is his coming out party. I hope DUers take notice.

28. Popcorn time! They are working to save the Party

and they know that Cheney must go.

They also know that Bush must go but they aren't sure yet how to do it.

Rove is not in control anymore if Kristof can speak his mind.

Sure wish I knew what made them change the front page.

8. Just a few days ago, Kristof appeared to be bashing Fitzgerald..
calling him "Hurricane Fitzgerald":

"Instead, Mr. Fitzgerald is rumored to be considering mushier kinds of indictments, for perjury, obstruction of justice or revealing classified information. Sure, flat-out perjury must be punished. But if the evidence is more equivocal, then indictments would mark just the kind of overzealous breach of prosecutorial discretion that was a disgrace when Democrats were targeted."

I lost interest in what he thinks about things at that point. No one pretended to be objective could compare Fitzgerald's work to that of Ken Starr's.

(Re TimesSelect, I read in a business publication that other websites are watching the NY Time's 'experiment' with curiousity to see if it succeeds. Pay them and you may be paying for a few more websites this year.)

9. On Tweety's Sunday show...
Which we get on Saturday nights in LA, Tweets and David Gregory offered some interesting speculation: that dick knew all about Wilson's trip in advance! Think about it...it's be completely dick-like, saying things that are just not true--"I never met Sen. Edwards until the beginning of this debate"--and everyone takes them as gospel for some reason.

They also had an interesting discussion, I think to try to make the chimp look good, about how chimpy wouldn't have gone to war if dick hadn't been his VP.

I think we'll be hearing more and more about the nefarious dick, VIce President Pork Chop, in the coming days.

Someone asked what she'd do if George's Dick was sent to prison, and she said "use Barney, like I always do!"

14. Something is up at the Times, Front Page Pulled back
Kristof maybe part of a Shifting at the NY Times. I got a call from a friend who lives in Manhattan and goes out on Saturday night and pickes up the Sunday Times early on the news stand. He couldn't tonight because the the front page on all the Times Sunday papers had been pulled and he was told the news stands were waiting for the new front page to come off the presses. I'm waiting for his call to let me know what required the major change. This doesn't happen very often. So something big is up. He thinks it's something to do with Rove. The NY Daily News has a headline "Leaker! The man
they call Bush's Brain" Maybe Rove's "A" list status has been confirmed. I'll let you know what I hear.

20. An Interesting Question...
What if Bush *did* ask Cheney to resign, and Cheney told him to go fuck himself? No one can force a VP to quit. It would take impeachment...and a squabble between a Pres and VP is not, in itself, reason enough for impeachment. I've always thought that someday this would happen--open war between a President and VP...a good reason for eliminating the Vice Presidency, something that should have happened after the election of 1800. Or at least, eliminating the 25th amendment, which is a Constitutional bomb waiting to go off...

23. Go public...
He asked for Dick's resignation and was refused. bush fired him. Dick refuses to leave office. bush get's a couple of secret service agents to drag his old ass out of the WH.

Not that it'll ever happen in this reality, but it is a wonderful fantasy.

22. If Cheney "comes clean," he will have to resign.
If he tells the truth, it will be torches and pitchforks time and he will be forced by his own party to resign because the GOP will be looking to its own political survival. His liability to them will far outweigh his usefulness.

For now, Cheney is going to do what he's always done. Ride it out on a carpet of bullsh*t and hope the storm passes.
