An Ethnicity-Baiting Chris Matthews Flat-Out Lied
via Daily Kos:

Well look what we have here. Tim Chapman at Townhall has the entire Democratic document that Chris Matthews called "disgusting", and which Republican liars from Drudge on down are using as the basis of their claim that Democrats attacked Alito for being Italian American. Yeah, the attack I talked about here.

Only one problem. Read the so-called "disgusting" memo. It doesn't say anything like that. Do a search. The word "Italian" isn't even in it. The whole so-called "outrage" has been a complete fabrication by Chris Matthews, by Matt Drudge, and by the perennially race-baiting right.

Oh, by all means, the memo talks about 'Scalito', a long-held nickname given to Alito by legal friend and foe alike to describe his far right, Scalia-like views.

And -- horror of horrors -- one point out of fifteen talks about a case where as a U.S. Attorney, Alito failed to win convictions of twenty mobsters after the longest criminal trial in U.S. history.

Doesn't say anything even remotely implying Alito had any connection to the mobsters except prosecuting them and apparently botching the case. Doesn't say anything at all about Alito being an Italian American. Doesn't imply jack-shit about it.

So Chris "Fair Game" Matthews, in addition to being the smarmy sack of pundit crap that we always knew he was, flatly made up the part about the Italian American slam in the memo. He lied. He put two-and-two together in his own head, and came up with Mobsters = Italian = Alito as his own slam, then sold it as a "disgusting" Democratic attack.

Let the bastard hear about it tomorrow. He fabricated the entire race-baiting slam in his own warped head. Ask him why he did it, because as an Italian American I'm interested in hearing that.

Thanks to Red State for pointing me at the actual memo, even though they lacked even the basic, primitive integrity to at any point actually tell us what it really said. Ditto to the mental geniuses of Town Hall, who went out of their way to publish a document proving flatly that they lied about their own smear.

Oh, and Drudge? I'm not nearly done with you on this one. Did Matthews come up with the attack on his own, or did he suck it directly out of your sorry teat? And who gave you the story to push?

1. Race baiting for Italians???
What is this, 1880? Jezz louise, let's get a little more current. What's next, getting on democrats for "German bashing" or "Irish bashing" or maybe "French bashing" oh wait, that's their thing.

5. You're right. It's the Sicilians who are a separate race.
Just ask any Italian.

7. What's the deal with Matthews receiving these so called "hot off the

fax" memos? Didn't he receive one of those against the Republicans a few weeks ago. I don't remember what it was regarding but it was the same situation, he was on air while he read it out loud. This may not be republican or democratic agendas. It may be MSNBC or Matthews himself making this crap up to get more ratings.

11. That's what I'd like to know, too!!!
From what I saw here on DU, Matthews (at first!) was saying "Who is this from" then attached it to Democrats. Absolutely NO confirmation of where it came from or who sent it.

So, if I set up my fax to have a header of "RNC Media Response Office" and add an RNC logo from their site and send him something, will he immediately attribute it to the Republicans and stick with it?

13. Was that the new supposed talking points on Wilson?
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 02:05 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
The ones where he was said to have laughed at them because they mentioned how Wilson had smoked pot in the past.

14. Yeh, that's what it was about.
Now I remember. And it wasn't really breaking news because I had read about it a couple of days before.

8. As a Black person, I understand that Italians have faced persecution.
I just always thought they've overcome many of the issues that make such persecution effective. Many CEO's are of Italian descent. Leaders of all types can trace their ancestry to that boot-shaped country.

I went to see a performance which intentionally stereotyped Italians for fun and profit; it was funny and well-attended or apparently profitable. The name of it was "Tony and Tina's Wedding" and it was a scream!

I admire groups, like the Italians, who have traveled so far along the road to enlightenment as to be able to laugh at themselves. I submit that Blacks (like me) need to thicken our skins and be less sensitive.

Where I work, I encourage racial discussion, jokes (offensive and not) and general sharing of information. I try to remain open-minded and to see the humor in most situations.

Right-wing GOP accusations of anti-Italian 'racism' sound hollow in my ears. As race has been used to divide and distract America since its inception, this latest wedge speaks volumes about the intent of the folks hammerin' on the broad side and drivin' the wedge in further.

9. The worst part of all this
Is that Matthews kept pushing the exposure of a CIA agent as simple "hardball politics" on his show for weeks on end. Yet, when someone looks at the very real record of a supreme court nominee and finds it lacking, Tweets regards it as "disgusting."

Maybe he's afraid of another call to Timmy.

12. Yesterday I had the The News Hour with Jim Lehrer
on, while I was mopping the floor, so I didn't catch any names, but a right wing pundit was being interviewed about Alito. This pundit painted a picture of him as a great choice for Supreme court because he wouldn't bring his biases into his decisions. Then the interviewer asked him what he thought of his nickname "Scalito", which means people compare him to Scalia. The pundit replied that he found the name flattering to be compared to Scalia.

:wow:

After the big lie on what an unbiased judge he would be, then he admits that Alito likes being compared to Scalia. So sometimes they speak the truth when they don't realize they are doing so.
